A few things we noticed in shipping during March.

Middle East tensions pushed bunker costs higher throughout the month. Carriers have started adding fuel surcharges, so total landed costs may come in higher than base freight rates suggest.

Red Sea rerouting continues to impact Europe lanes, with some shipments seeing 1–2 weeks longer transit times.

The Asian bulk market also softened toward the month-end, with limited cargo volume and a more cautious overall sentiment.

Overall, March was a reminder that base freight rates don’t tell the full story. Allowing some buffer on lead time and keeping an eye on surcharges can make a real difference.
