The Constant Within
Change is the only constant.
Our bodies remind us of this every day. Cells renew, seasons turn, relationships evolve, and we move through cycles of beginnings, endings, loss, growth, and return. Nothing remains exactly as it was. And right now, it can feel as though the entire planet is moving through an especially intense season of change.
Politically, socially, climatically, economically, and technologically, the ground beneath us seems to be shifting. Our food systems are changing. Transportation is changing. The climate is changing. Wars, fires, floods, volcanoes, and uncertainty remind us that life is never as fixed as we might wish it to be.
For many people, this constant movement is frightening. It can create anger, anxiety, and a desperate desire to find someone or something to blame. When the world feels unstable, we naturally search for something outside ourselves that we can control.
But perhaps there is another way to meet change.
Instead of searching for what is permanent outside of ourselves, perhaps we can begin looking for the thread of consistency within.
For me, that thread is a quiet inner light—a sense of connection that remains even while everything around me moves. I find it in the Earth beneath my feet, in the love of friends and family, in the simple miracle of being alive. I find it most deeply in meditation, when I become still enough to feel that steady presence at the center and core of my body.
The world may be changing, but I can return to myself.
I can breathe.
I can listen.
I can remember what matters.
This does not mean ignoring suffering or pretending that everything is fine. There are people experiencing tremendous pain and danger for countless reasons. There are wars, displacement, hunger, environmental disasters, and profound uncertainty. We do not need to deny these realities in order to find steadiness within ourselves.
In fact, perhaps finding that steadiness is what allows us to meet the realities of our time with greater clarity.
So I wonder: Where do you find your consistent self?
Where is the place inside you that remains connected when everything else feels uncertain? Where do you find your inner strength? And can you learn to move from that place—not from fear, anger, reaction, or helplessness, but from a deeper place of inner knowing?
Perhaps we can make it a practice.
For one day, pause before reacting.
Take a breath.
Feel your feet on the Earth. Feel your body. Find that quiet center within you.
Then ask: What is mine to do from this place?
Maybe tomorrow, we do it again.
And the next day.
And the next.
Until returning to ourselves becomes a habit.
Perhaps then we can begin moving through this changing world with purpose, vision, clarity, grounded intention, and love.
We cannot stop change.
But we can choose how we meet it.
And perhaps the greatest stability we will ever find is not in a world that stays the same, but in discovering the steady light within ourselves while everything else continues to change.
