🌱❄️Ice Plant: Ice beauty in the form of diamond lettuce

Discover the beauty and usefulness of the Ice Plant at Kaly aquaponic farm. A fascinating succulent with medicinal properties that will soon become an exclusive product in the Farmia Food range. Diamond lettuce as a new gastronomic treasure.

The Ice Plant, also known as Ice Sunflower (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum), is native to South Africa and attracts attention with its striking leaves covered with small transparent growths that resemble ice crystals. This plant is not only aesthetically attractive but also demonstrates the ability to survive in dry and harsh conditions. Recently, the Ice Plant has been tested at our Kaly aquaponic farm with the hope of using it effectively in aquaponics.

🕵Features of Ice Plant
Ice Plant is a low, carpet-like plant with thickened fleshy leaves that have characteristic transparent cells filled with water. These cells act as an adaptation to dry conditions, trapping moisture and forming an insulating layer, which helps the plant to limit water loss. The leaves are silvery green, but can take on a purple tinge at low temperatures.

In summer, the plant flowers and produces small, pink or white flowers that attract pollinators. After flowering, small fruits containing seeds form. The Ice Plant can therefore not only be an interesting ornamental plant, but also an abundant source of food for insects.

🌱What did Future Farming lead to grow its own seedlings?

👉One of our most successful research projects has been our seedling production research, which helped us to start our own seedling production for our production farms at Kaly Farm in the summer of 2021. This step was important not only for self-sufficiency in crop production, but also to reduce operating costs.

Five key advantages of having your own seedling nursery:
1) Quality and control – growing your own seedlings allows better control over the quality of production and hygiene of growing conditions. This allows us to closely monitor the growing process from the start and ensure optimal growing conditions for the plants.
2) Responsibility for the supply chain – setting up your own nursery reduces your vulnerability to market fluctuations or supply problems. We are then able to plan and manage our inventory more effectively.
3) Innovation and specific needs – having your own growing facility allows you to adapt to specific needs. We can focus on special plant varieties or innovations in aquaponic and hydroponic growing methods.
4) Sustainability – with our own growing facility we can implement sustainable practices, minimize our ecological footprint and contribute to environmental goals.
5) Cost reduction – we will reduce costs in the long run by avoiding purchasing seedlings from outside suppliers.

💡Today at Future Farming we have a state-of-the-art growing facility for our own salad and herb seedlings with a capacity of around 25,000 seedlings per week. By using the entire Kaly aquaponic farm to produce seedlings, we can increase our capacity up to 100,000 per week.

The strategic 🤝 partnership between Future Farming and GrowDirector is leading to a new era in the automation and efficiency of aquaponic farms through advanced artificial intelligence and innovative technologies.

In January 2024, we held commercial negotiations with the Israeli company GrowDirector to improve the automation of Future Farming’s aquaponic production farms. Like us, GrowDirector is united by research and expertise, practical experience and innovation in modern agriculture. The strategic partnership with Grow Director is the result of a two-year tender for a hardware and software supplier to take the automation and efficiency of our aquaponic farms to the next level.

🌎 Future Farming at IPM Essen: New partnerships on the horizon

In January 2024, Grow Director and Future Farming came together 🤝 to take aquaponic 🌱🐟 farm automation to the next level.

The beginning of the collaboration is the result of a two-year tender process to find a supplier of hardware and software for our farms, followed by structured data storage and analysis. Together with our Israeli partner, we plan to use artificial intelligence to analyze three years of data from Future Farming’s operations to significantly optimize the entire operation.

🎯The largest aquaponic farm in the Czech Republic has sold out its entire production for 2024.

The huge aquaponic 🐟🌱farm in Brno – Heršpice, under the management of Future Farming, was a stunning success, having sold out this year’s entire production in January and before the completion of its construction. With growing demand from Farmia Food, the farm is now looking to expand its capacity, bringing even more healthy and sustainable food to the Czech market.

🌱🐟 Do you know the heart of every aquaponic farm?

It's the biofilter that transforms fish waste into useful substances for plants. ✅

👉 The biofilter converts toxic ammonia and nitrites from fish waste into non-toxic nitrates that are vital to plants. This process is called nitrification, and nitrifying bacteria are the ones that make it possible.

Together with BAKTOMA.cz, a company that selects and processes these special bacteria, we have developed special mixtures of these microorganisms that help us keep our biofilters functioning properly. 👍

This is a challenge because the bacteria have to work in different temperature conditions - for rainbow trout the upper temperature limit is around 17°C, while African catfish should not see temperatures below 28°C.

💁‍♂️ This long-term collaboration, which we value very much, allows us to achieve optimal results in different conditions. 🤝

Year five has been full of new successes for Future Farming and strategic partnerships that have taken our sustainable agriculture even further. 🤩

What were the important milestones this year?

5⃣. year - Development and strategic expansion 🚀

🌱 We inaugurated a new Mendel greenhouse equipped with our aeroponic technology.

🌱 For our efforts and contribution in the field of organic food growing and our unique A-shape growing system, we received a prestigious award in the "Smart Cities 2023" competition.

🌱 The Development Division completed the development of the so-called Egyptian Farm, whose parameters are suitable for the countries of Southern Europe and Africa.

🌱 In the second block of the Brno farm in the Czech Republic, we launched the Aztec Garden. This is a crucial step towards the completion of the gigafarm in Heršpice.

🌱 In May 2023, we publicly presented our economic results at the Future World conference. With sales of almost 20 million EUR since our foundation, we continue to grow and show how our innovations are driving modern agriculture forward.

🌱 Our participation at the international GreenTech fair in Amsterdam generated a huge amount of interest in our technologies, especially the Aztec Garden.

🌱 The distribution of aquaponic products through our subsidiary Farmia Food continues to expand. We cooperate with the largest online farming marketplace Scuk.cz and we won our first big contract with the multinational supermarket chain MAKRO ČR.

🌱We have entered into a strategic partnership with Rybí zahrada farm, which has provided us with sufficient reserve to cover the demand for aquaponic vegetables and fish in the Czech Republic and we can start to turn our attention to other countries where there is a great interest in building aquaponic farms.

🌱 The Slovak Ministry of Land Management and Rural Development is providing us with an investment incentive for the development of aquaponic infrastructure in Slovakia, which is another important step for us towards international expansion.
