Maag took first place in the Extrusion category with its new extrex⁶ EC PVC pump. It is the world’s first gear pump specifically designed for the continuous conveyance of rigid PVC, opening a new chapter in PVC extrusion.

Technological highlights of the extrex⁶ EC:

- Gap-free construction with no dead zones: The innovative design eliminates dead spaces and prevents prolonged residence times of the material. This stops thermal decomposition and ensures a stable, clean process.

- Up to 50% greater efficiency in the extruder: The uniform, pressure-stable conveying significantly reduces the load on the extruder. Depending on the application, throughput can be significantly increased or energy savings of up to 50% achieved.
- Reduction in process temperature by up to 10 °C: The optimised temperature control reduces the thermal stress on the material. This makes the use of expensive stabilisers unnecessary in some cases – a considerable economic advantage.

This case story from one of the UK’s largest soft drink manufacturers, Britvic, demonstrates how AI-powered and industry intelligent condition monitoring can help production teams detect failures before they happen, preventing lost production, reducing resource waste and improving operational efficiency.

Using Alfa Laval’s condition monitoring solution, the company identified an imminent pump issue that otherwise would have gone unnoticed until failure occurred. Acting on a single notification, the maintenance team repaired the defect pump during a planned production stop and avoided six hours of unplanned downtime as well as 288,000 bottles of lost product and 2,000 litres of cleaning water.

With the extrex⁶ EC, Maag presents the first gear pump specifically designed for the continuous conveying of rigid PVC (polyvinyl chloride). The new development addresses the thermal sensitivity of the material through a gap-free design without dead spaces. This effectively prevents the material from sticking and stagnating in the pump, which significantly reduces thermal stress and counteracts the risk of degradation.

The uniform, pressure-stable conveying relieves the extruder during operation. Depending on the application, this allows either material throughput to be increased or, at a constant throughput, energy savings of up to 50% to be achieved in the extruder. In addition, the design enables optimized temperature control in the melt process. Since this lowers the thermal stress on the material, the use of expensive stabilizers can be partially reduced, representing a direct economic advantage for the processor.

The ‘NoriResist’ high-performance coating by the KSB is a novelty in carbon-based surface technology for pumps and valves. It markedly increases the durability and efficiency as well as the sustainability of modern pump systems. Close cooperation between research, application technology and industry partners formed the basis of this development. The new coating primarily aims at applications in waste water and process engineering.

NoriResist is a diamond-like carbon coating applied to hydraulic components, such as impellers, wear plates, discharge covers, casing wear rings and impeller wear rings. It can also be used for coating the casings of close-coupled pumps. Suitable base materials are grey cast iron, nodular cast iron and steel materials. The coating can also be applied to other parts – even to selected plastic components.

With a hardness of 4000 to 8000 HV (40 – 80 GPa) NoriResist is highly resistant to abrasive wear, especially from fluids containing sand.

The new AE-RD/RE hopper pump is a progressing cavity pump engineered to handle highly viscous, non-flowable and solids-laden media in demanding industrial applications. Designed for industries such as

- wastewater,
- paper,
- marine,
- chemical and process engineering,

The AE‑RD/RE is purpose-built to convey difficult media, including dewatered sewage sludge and other thick, high-solids products, through a closed piping system rather than open conveyor belts. Its two-part, large-scale casing design, optimized screw conveyor and vertical wall surfaces in the inlet hopper enable trouble-free operation without the need for separate bridge breakers, reducing equipment complexity and investment costs. The flow-optimized stuffing box between the inlet hopper and rotor/stator ensures the best possible filling of the conveyor elements and helps prevent partial dry running, increasing reliability in continuous-duty service.
