From kitchen experiment to cult favourite: Introducing our Banana BBQ Sauce

🔥 Your new go-to grilling sauce
♻️ Made with 35% overripe bananas

Bananas are one of the most wasted fruits in supermarkets, often rejected simply for being too ripe, too spotted or left as “single bananas”.
The irony? The riper the banana, the deeper the flavour.

Our Banana BBQ Sauce was born out of overripe bananas and a little curiosity. Inspired by the flavour of Filipino banana ketchup, we set out to create something playful and unexpected. The first idea didn’t quite go as planned, but sometimes the best recipes come from rethinking the process instead of giving up on it. A few months later, we decided to mix our failed creation with soy sauce, ginger, spices and added some smokiness to it.

The result? A velvety, chocolate-brown sauce with soft vanilla notes and the perfect balance of sweet and savoury. Many times, out of failed experiments the best outcomes come after!! 

35% of our banana bbq sauce is made from overripe and surplus organic bananas.

And because we believe in cooking circularly, the upcycling doesn’t stop there:

♻️ We dehydrate the banana peels and blend the powder back into the sauce
♻️ Or transform them into smoky banana skin “bacon” served in sandwiches and pintxos at our Imbiss Bistro in Markthalle Neun

👨‍🍳👩‍🍳Here’s how we love to use our sauce:

- Stirred into beans for a rich, smoky “meaty” flavour — fully vegan
- Mixed into mayo for the ultimate potato salad upgrade
- As a marinade for roasted vegetables or mushrooms
– Drizzled over grilled corn, burgers or sandwiches
– Mixed with olive oil and vinegar for a smoky dressing
– Straight from the bottle (honestly… highly recommended)

For years, we imagined having a vitrine where we could offer our products by weight. Now it’s finally here.

We’re serving special ferments and pickles you can taste on the spot, and of course take home with you for your enjoyment at home, barbecues, picnics and any celebration with your loved ones.

Currently in the vitrine: Kimchi-marinated olives, miso-roasted onions, anticucho-style marinated mushrooms, Roots ferments, fermented cauliflower, pickled red onions, chimichurri, fermented dill cucumbers.

Coming up soon: Fermented asparagus, summer stone fruit preserves, rhubarb specialties, and more seasonal creations.

Moving to a new location after closing our canteen at Atelier Gardens was not easy.

When we moved out in December, we had to shift into an “in-between” kitchen and store much of our equipment in a separate storage. We joked about being “decentralized” for a while, but the reality was much more challenging than that.

On top of it, 2025 hit us financially very hard. And while moving into Markthalle Neun is something we’ve dreamed of for a long time, doing it with a very limited budget made it a real test.

And then came the biggest challenge: making it all happen in just one month.

And somehow... we did it!

We signed our lease on February 15th and made our very first sale on March 20th. No shelves yet, a few things still missing. but full of creativity, drive, and excitement for what lies ahead. The Markthalle Neun Family only breathes potential collaboration everywhere: people are doing business for good food, in a magical and emblematic place in Berlin.
We can’t wait to welcome you.

This Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of May, come by for a drink and a small tapita, celebrate with us over a delicious menu, or explore our products now also available in a seasonal format directly from our vitrine.

We’ve been a bit quiet… but for a good reason.

After months of moving, rebuilding, and reimagining, we’ve officially opened our new home at Markthalle Neun.

And now it’s time to invite you OFFICIALLY to come visit!

This coming 9&10th of May, come visit us, taste what we’ve been working on, and experience Roots Radicals in a whole new way. From small tapas-style plates to our weekly changing lunch dishes, plus, our full range of products, gift boxes, and rotating specials.

If there’s one chutney from us that absolutely rocks with any - and we mean ANY - cheese, from the softest goat to an intense gorgonzola, without a doubt, it’s our Red Paprika Chutney.

This might be the easiest snack upgrade you’ll make all week.

Today we want to introduce one of the simplest and most delicious snacks in town, a simple way to use our Bread & Butter Pickles and enjoy them anytime at home:

🥪 Sourdough toast with cheese & Bread & Butter Pickles

Ingredients:
• 1 slice sourdough bread
• Butter
• 1 slice of your favorite cheese (cheddar, gouda, or similar)
• 4–6 slices Bread & Butter Pickles
• Flaky salt

Preparation:
1. Toast the sourdough until golden and crisp.
2. Spread butter generously while still warm.
3. Add the cheese slice.
4. Top with our Bread & Butter Pickles.
5. Finish with a pinch of flaky salt and enjoy with a cup of coffee or a fresh juice for the perfect afternoon snack.
