Summer break! Our shop in Berlin is closed this week. We reopen and shipping restarts when we're back behind the counter on Monday (10 August).

We won't switch off completely: we're braving the Hungarian heatwave and visiting some winemakers to find new and exciting wines for you. Stay in the shade, stay hydrated, and if you're thirsty for a glass of wine, consider a Fröccs!

🏆 Hungary just had its best-ever Decanter World Wine Awards!

DWWA 2026 gave Hungary its first-ever Best in Show, its first-ever Platinum for a red, and a record 8 Platinum + 15 Gold. We went through the full winners list, and plenty of them are on our shelves right now. A few highlights:

🥂 Kreinbacher Brut Classic (Somló) — PLATINUM. One of just 198 Platinum wines in the world, and one of the most affordable. Kreinbacher medalled with all four of its sparklers.
🍯 Balassa (Tokaj) — a Platinum double: the Villő 6 puttonyos Aszú and the sweet Szamorodni 2022.
✨ Sauska Furmint 2025 (Tokaj) — a Decanter GOLD, 95 points, for €10.90. Yes, really.

Speaking of alcohol-free drinks: have you tried vinegar?

No, really: Meet BOBO Vinegret, new to our shelves, handmade by Gabriella Borbáth, a pálinka distiller turned vinaigrette maker.

Just mix a few drops with fresh sparkling water to create a "shrub", a sharp, fruity, sophisticated drink similar to a Fröccs in flavor. It's a centuries-old secret that that turns a glass of sparkling water into something you actually crave.

Fröccs is Hungary's summer staple: good white or rosé wine topped with fresh sparkling water. While the original might be the real thing, turns out it can be just as good with no alcohol at all.

Try it with verjus: a tart, lemony juice pressed from unripe grapes that growers trim off in early summer. Top it up with sparkling water and a hit of elderflower cordial: crisp, sharp, alive with bubbles. Just like the real thing.

Want something closer to wine? Zelna Zéróka blends verjus with grape must into a genuinely complex drink that's fooled a few wine lovers. No sad, watered-down alcohol-free "wine" here, just fresh, real flavors.

Fröccs = Wein + Sprudelwasser. Diese Woche alkoholfrei: Degenfeld Verjus (Saft unreifer Trauben) mit Sprudel und einem Schuss Holunderblütensirup, oder Zelna Zéróka, eine 0%-Cuvée aus Verjus und Traubenmost. Kein trauriger entalkoholisierter „Wein", sondern etwas Echtes und Geschmacksvolles.

The next few days are going to be hot again. Fröccs weather ⛲

Wine and soda water, Hungary's national drink for almost 200 years. A good fröccs turns a fresh, high-acid white or rosé into something light that's exactly right in the shade on a hot afternoon. 🥂😎

In Hungary you never just order "a fröccs". Every ratio has its own name: the little kisfröccs, the long hosszúlépés for a slow afternoon, the big nagyfröccs when the day calls for it.

Our tip: a crisp Olaszrizling (Welshriesling) or a light rosé, the water ice-cold and as fizzy as you can get it, straight from the soda bottle if possible.

Exciting news from Somlói Borvidék!

Taposó Kút is an historic 18th-century well on Somló Hill, originally said to be over 80 metres deep. It was dug straight through the hard basalt stone of the mountain to bring water up to the hill. It has lain in ruins for decades, mostly filled with rubbish and debris.

However, in the last few days, an ambitious team has started descending into the well, clearing away the debris and reinforcing the walls as they go. They have dug down to below 70 metres and are still going! They have found animal bones and weapons, and have even confirmed the legend that a piano was once thrown into the well. 😮
