Harvest in Hungary is nearly over. 🍇 Many w**eries started picking in early August, weeks earlier than usual.

It was a hard year: a very hot, dry summer, early hailstorms, and a new vine disease impacted the harvest. The berries stayed small and gave less juice. Still, the w**emakers are hopeful. The crop is smaller in places but decent, the grapes came in ripe and healthy, and some 2026 w**es could turn out truly great. We can't wait to taste them. Tonight, open something good in honour of everyone who spent this summer in the vineyards.

Three of the Hungarian sparkling producers we carry came home with medals from this year's Ch*****ne & Sparkling W**e World Championships: gold for Etyeki Kúria's Blanc de Noirs, Kreinbacher's Égoïste and Sauska's Blanc de Blancs, plus eight silvers between them. 🥂

Hungarian bubbles are having a very good year. Congratulations to all three.

Summer break! Our shop in Berlin is closed this week. We reopen and shipping restarts when we're back behind the counter on Monday (10 August).

🏆 Hungary just had its best-ever Decanter World W**e Awards!

DWWA 2026 gave Hungary its first-ever Best in Show, its first-ever Platinum for a red, and a record 8 Platinum + 15 Gold. We went through the full winners list, and plenty of them are on our shelves right now. A few highlights:

🥂 Kreinbacher Brut Classic (Somló) — PLATINUM. One of just 198 Platinum w**es in the world, and one of the most affordable. Kreinbacher medalled with all four of its sparklers.
🍯 Balassa (Tokaj) — a Platinum double: the Villő 6 puttonyos Aszú and the sweet Szamorodni 2022.
✨ Sauska Furmint 2025 (Tokaj) — a Decanter GOLD, 95 points, for €10.90. Yes, really.

Speaking of alcohol-free drinks: have you tried vinegar?

No, really: Meet BOBO Vinegret, new to our shelves, handmade by Gabriella Borbáth, a pálinka distiller turned vinaigrette maker.

Fröccs is Hungary's summer staple: good white or rosé w**e topped with fresh sparkling water. While the original might be the real thing, turns out it can be just as good with no alcohol at all.

Try it with verjus: a tart, lemony juice pressed from unripe grapes that growers trim off in early summer. Top it up with sparkling water and a hit of elderflower cordial: crisp, sharp, alive with bubbles. Just like the real thing.

Want something closer to w**e? Zelna Zéróka blends verjus with grape must into a genuinely complex drink that's fooled a few w**e lovers. No sad, watered-down alcohol-free "w**e" here, just fresh, real flavors.

Fröccs = Wein + Sprudelwasser. Diese Woche alkoholfrei: Degenfeld Verjus (Saft unreifer Trauben) mit Sprudel und einem Schuss Holunderblütensirup, oder Zelna Zéróka, eine 0%-Cuvée aus Verjus und Traubenmost. Kein trauriger entalkoholisierter „Wein", sondern etwas Echtes und Geschmacksvolles.

The next few days are going to be hot again. Fröccs weather ⛲

W**e and soda water, Hungary's national drink for almost 200 years. A good fröccs turns a fresh, high-acid white or rosé into something light that's exactly right in the shade on a hot afternoon. 🥂😎

In Hungary you never just order "a fröccs". Every ratio has its own name: the little kisfröccs, the long hosszúlépés for a slow afternoon, the big nagyfröccs when the day calls for it.

Our tip: a crisp Olaszrizling (Welshriesling) or a light rosé, the water ice-cold and as fizzy as you can get it, straight from the soda bottle if possible.
