Exciting news from Somlói Borvidék!

Taposó Kút is an historic 18th-century well on Somló Hill, originally said to be over 80 metres deep. It was dug straight through the hard basalt stone of the mountain to bring water up to the hill. It has lain in ruins for decades, mostly filled with rubbish and debris.

However, in the last few days, an ambitious team has started descending into the well, clearing away the debris and reinforcing the walls as they go. They have dug down to below 70 metres and are still going! They have found animal bones and weapons, and have even confirmed the legend that a piano was once thrown into the well. 😮

An interesting read about modern dry Furmint and its history from Jancis Robinson.

Furmint is Hungary's most fascinating white grape variety and it really made an impression on all our guests who tasted it at this year's Furmint February tastings!

Both Jancis and Oliver Coleman attended a revealing tasting in London recently.

Here's another fascinating piece of Furmint history: a rare local Turkish grape turns out to be genetically identical to Furmint!

How did it get there? Probably through II. Ferenc Rákóczi, a Hungarian nobleman who owned many vineyards around Tokaj and fled to Turkey after his failed uprising against the Habsburgs in the 18th century. Who would have guessed?

Wie kam sie dorthin? Wahrscheinlich durch II. Ferenc Rákóczi, einen ungarischen Adligen, der viele Weinberge rund um Tokaj besaß und nach seinem gescheiterten Aufstand gegen die Habsburger im 18. Jahrhundert in die Türkei floh. Wer hätte das gedacht?

This morning at Wine Paris, Dr José Vouillamoz and Seyit Karagözoğlu of Paşaeli Winery made the surprising announcement that Kolorko, a rare Turkish grape, is genetically the same as Hungary’s esteemed Furmint.
