California is often celebrated for what’s new.

This week offered a reminder of something equally important: what endures.

From multigenerational family wineries to the communities working to preserve vineyards, landscapes, and traditions for future generations, conversations explored the role of stewardship in shaping what’s next.

It was a fitting conversation to conclude at Chateau Montelena, where one of California wine’s most enduring stories continues to evolve.

Because progress isn’t only about what we create. It’s also about what we choose to carry forward.

What makes something memorable?

Sometimes it’s an iconic bottle.

Sometimes it’s a lesser-known varietal that surprises you.

Sometimes it’s the care taken to steward a vineyard for generations to come.

In Napa Valley this week, a global circle of wine leaders considered the many expressions of excellence shaping wine—from celebrated classics to unexpected discoveries, and from enduring traditions to new ways of thinking about what makes a wine experience meaningful.

What carries an idea forward?

A garden.
A meal.
A song.
A story worth retelling.

As Next Wave continues, voices from around the world gathered in California wine country to exchange ideas on food, farming, hospitality, culture and wine—and the role each plays in shaping what’s next.

Because the future of wine won't be shaped by one voice—but rather by the conversations, collisions and moments of discovery that happen when different perspectives meet.

Farm tech. Historic old vines. Climate-resilient vineyards. Shared tables.

As Next Wave Sessions got underway in California, wine leaders from around the world explored the forces shaping wine today—and the people and places bringing those ideas to life.

Alongside discussions of innovation and adaptation, another question surfaced repeatedly: what deserves to endure?

A celebration of California’s old vines at Ridge Vineyards offered a powerful reminder that innovation and preservation are not opposing forces.

California has long been a place where both can coexist.

California on the mic 🎙️🍷 We’ve partnered with SOMMELIER.der.Podcast for a new ‘Deep Dive’ podcast series with some of Germany’s top sommeliers, including their expert picks from each region.

Episode 1 – Maximilian Wilm dives into Napa Valley: “a region that, like few others, has divided the history of wine in two – into a before and an after: the Napa Valley, Northern California, the valley that challenged the world order of wine in 1976 and has owed no answers since.”

🍷 Standout wines from Matthiasson, Dominus, Arnot-Roberts and Spottswoode

Episode 2 – Justin G. Leone explores Sonoma: “a mosaic of coastline, mountains, valleys, windbreaks, fog banks, and heat islands – a region that doesn't simply allow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc to coexist, but rather creates distinct, often astonishingly precise settings for them.”

🍷 Standout wines from Merry Edwards, Kistler, Ceritas and Louis M. Martini

Episode 3 – Moritz-Christian Brand on the Central Coast: “a topographically fragmented, climatically polarized wine landscape that encompasses Burgundy and Rhône varieties as well as Bordeaux types, coastal fog and Mediterranean warmth, all within a 450km stretch – demanding both patience and precision.”

🍷 Standout wines from Au Bon Climat, Ridge, DAOU and Tablas Creek

Episode 4 coming soon! Can you guess which region is next?

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the vineyard drone! 💡🍇 Discover how winegrowers are using smart tech in the skies to farm more sustainably on the ground.

At certified sustainable Iron Horse Vineyards in Sonoma, multispectral drone imaging helps the team monitor vineyard health using NDVI technology.

How does it work? 🔎 NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) uses infrared and near-infrared light to map vine health. Thriving plants appear in red, while those with potential issues show up in green.

Catching problems like water stress or disease early, and pinpointing them exactly, means winegrowers can reduce intervention and their overall environmental impact.

Sommelier school is in session 🍷🇳🇴 Hans Weijnefalk Larsson , educator and co-founder of The Wine Hub, has been busy bringing California’s finest to the Norwegian Sommelier Association in Oslo this spring:

Starting with a Zinfandel masterclass and a lineup of seven standout wines that traced California’s heritage grape across its most iconic and old-vine growing regions, from Lodi to Sonoma.

Then it was time to get certified 🎓 Six Norwegian sommeliers studied hard and tasted top wines to get their California Capstone Level 1 & 2 certifications – gratulerer!

Which wines have you tasted from Hans’ classes?
