When raps on a historic opera stage while Polish jazz virtuoso sets the tone, you know it’s not an average gala.
On April 12th, I had the privilege of supporting the International Dresden —experiencing the action both right in the thick of it and behind the scenes.
In the spotlight: The Polish author and activist Klementyna Suchanow. Her book "This is War" ( ) dissects the global network of ultra-conservative forces attempting to heavily restrict human rights worldwide—particularly the rights of women and the LGBTQ+ community.
The laudatory speech was delivered by Luxembourg’s long-standing former Foreign Minister, Jean Asselborn. Further powerful statements were shared by Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer, Opera Director Nora Schmid, Peter Theiler, Peter Ufer, and Dresden’s Mayor for Culture Annekatrin Klepsch.
An award with a profound history: The prize stems from the private initiative of the late Nobel Laureate in Medicine, Günter Blobel. As a child, he witnessed the destruction of Dresden in 1945 and lost his sister to the war. Together with Klaus Tschira (co-founder of SAP), he established this award to give a global stage to courage and civil liberties.
Why was it so special to me: As interpreters, we often operate where discretion is paramount. That makes it all the more rewarding when we get to contribute to initiatives that are not meant to stay behind closed doors—but instead deserve to be amplified loudly to the world!
