Seahorses have one of the most unusual reproductive systems in the animal world. They belong to the Syngnathidae family, which also includes pipefish and sea dragons.
During mating, the female transfers her eggs into the male’s brood pouch. The eggs are then fertilized, and the male carries the developing embryos inside his pouch until they are ready to be born. Depending on the species and conditions, the pregnancy can last for several weeks.
When the young are fully developed, the male goes through contractions and gives birth, sometimes releasing dozens or even hundreds of tiny seahorses.
It is one of nature’s rare examples where the male carries the pregnancy and gives birth.
