Our Story
The idea behind the Agrain Products comes from 2 of our founders' work at Copenhagen University back in 2017. Emil, a food innovation master student, and Karin one of his teachers designed an innovation project using Brewer's Spent Grains as a food ingredient. The project showed super promising food attributes, and they decided to continue the research. Emil worked on the subject in his Master's Thesis, and the positive outcomes continued. As the thesis developed, Karin and Emil started to realize that up-cycling the spent grains could potentially be a game changing factor in a world with rapidly escalating resource and health challenges. With this in mind they decided to test the business potential of the spent grains after Emil had graduated. The plan was strong, potential customers, business partners and consumers all liked the products, the concept and not least the fact that we would be turning a waste product into a nutrient abundant food resource.
In June 2018 Emil, Karin and Aviaja founded Circular Food Technology. And in May 2019 after 11 months of hard work; testing and developing processing methods, refining products, presenting the business to everyone interested, the first Agrain Products was produced and shipped to customers.
The brand name Agrain Products is a fusion between again and grain, which is exactly what we do - we use the grains again. Brewer's Spent Grains are the malted and mashed grains used to brew beer and whisky. The leftover is considered a waste, either used as feed for livestock or discarded, depending on where in the world the brewing takes place. Globally 40 M tons of BSG is produced and discarded every year.
Let's use that grain again!
