We just discovered this video from 2018 about a vetiver system training that took place in St. Lucia. The film showcases many applications of vetiver in both rural and urban settings. Dominica already has a lot of plants, especially in the Kalinago Territory, to get many projects started!

Did you know breadfruit was introduced to the Caribbean from sailors who brought it from the South Pacific?

What do we love more than a good plant mystery? Solving it! We're excited to share that our Breadfruit Institute, National Tropical Botanical Garden helped solve a 230-year-old one: what were the original Tahitian cultivars of breadfruit that Captain Bligh introduced to the Caribbean, now a major producer and consumer of this important crop?

Through scientific analysis, local knowledge, and historical sources, an international team of researchers were able to link two Caribbean cultivars to their Tahitian counterparts and propose additional matches! The research was informed by our breadfruit collection and Dr. Diane Ragone's (Director Emerita of the Breadfruit Institute) fieldwork in Tahiti and beyond. We're extra excited because the publication of this discovery coincides with the date of breadfruit's introduction to the Caribbean on January 23 in 1793.

What is COP27?

It is the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference.

A defining moment in the fight against climate change.

Science has established beyond doubt that the window for action is closing rapidly. In November 2022, Egypt will host the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, with a view to building on previous successes and paving the way for future ambition.
A golden opportunity for all stakeholders to rise to the occasion and tackle effectively the global challenge of climate change facilitated by Egypt on the African continent.

Island Innovation wants to ensure that your communities are represented and that relevant information is made available to you.

During COP27 we plan to create an “Island Pavilion” where we will share key insights and developments related to remote, rural and island communities.

PODCAST: Hawaiian Agroforestry and ʻUlu by Ka Leo o ka Uluau

Noa Lincoln joins Lei and Drew to share about the past, present, and future of Hawaiian agroforestry and the role of ʻulu in our lives.

Noa Kekuewa Lincoln is a scholar and practitioner of indigenous agriculture. He has had the opportunity to experience and learn from traditional growers including First Nations peoples from Northern, Central, and South America, and throughout the Pacific. In his studies at Yale and Stanford University – and now as a professor at the University of Hawaiʻi – Noa seeks to demonstrate the sustainability and productivity of indigenous agricultural methods to the global scientific community. He is the founder of Māla Kaluʻulu Cooperative that is working to revive the traditional breadfruit belt in the Moku o Kona.
