Tilapia: A Key Driver of Sustainable Aquaculture in Bangladesh and the World
Tilapia: Small Fish, Big Impact!
Tilapia continues to transform global aquaculture through its high productivity, affordability, and sustainability. In Bangladesh alone, production exceeded 300,000 metric tons in FY 2023–2024, contributing around 10–12% of national aquaculture production, while total fish production reached a record 5.02 million metric tons. Globally, nearly 7 million metric tons of tilapia are produced annually, supporting food security, nutrition, employment, and the blue economy across more than 150 countries.
Investing in better genetics, quality seed, innovative farming systems, and sustainable aquaculture practices will ensure that tilapia remains a cornerstone of future food systems and rural economic development.
