When we came to Finca Sagrada there was a restoration project happening on Kuntur Wachana mountain. It's the largest of its kind in Southern Ecuador and possibly the Andes.

The project is nearing its next phase, the tree island experiment, which is designed to see whether a different methodology can assist in reforesting the dry forests of the Andes.

I've been experimenting with plasters to go on our walls and went through a few experiments to get the right mix. Every context is different and there is no one-size-fits all for natural-made plaster. Every soil and sand is different.

For 4 sand, 2 earth, 1 powdered lime mix: very hard to put on; strenuous effort for bonding (tallow on bread). Required 3 days of misting, sponging to mitigate cracks.

For lime putty (1:1 calcium hydroxide w/water, mixed well and left to set for 24 hrs) - bonded well, but dries extremely fast here. (Butter out of fridge on bread). Required 24 hrs to mitigate cracks.

Base mix: 1 part lime putty already processed and idle for 24 hrs; 2.5 parts very find sand. Require 6 hrs to mitigate cracks.

Granted, by the 3rd experiment I understood much better the need to excessively wet the substrate over multiple time frames to reduce the amount of moisture drawn from the putty into the wall. This is what causes cracking. So my first two experiments would have resulted differently had I ensured wet walls.

The final mix felt like it could be learned to work like an artist, so it became less about the cracks and more about the feeling of applying it.

Our sweet Rosy has been pregnant for what seems like ages and in the final weeks of her pregnancy, was adopted by the Geidts, who have been working overtime to ensure she has enough nutrients to have a successful labor.

All the hard work is well rewarded and the farm was delighted to wake up to news that she had given birth to boys, Jingle and Jack!

A beautiful day at the Finca! Plastering, foraging and a birthday!

Today we did our first base plaster test for our adobe home. 4 gal of sand lightly sifted to 4mm, 2 gal of clay (finely sifted) and 1 gal of hydroxide lime.

Will take more in-depth video when I apply more.

The rain has created some delays with the build but the team put a temporary roof up and the show goes on!

Really greening up around here and, while we want to get the roof on the house before it really starts pouring, we appreciate the landscape becoming more verdant every day!

I thought I escaped the Matrix by moving to Ecuador. Turns out, I brought it with me. 🌿

The Matrix isn't the government, the 9-to-5, or "the system." It's the ego itself, that voice in your head constantly judging, comparing, seeking.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: you can homestead, meditate, reject mainstream culture... and still be completely trapped. The ego just wears a new costume.

The "awakened" person looking down on the "sleepers"? That's ego.
The spiritual seeker feeling superior? That's ego.

The Gift of Parenthood

In my newest piece I write about what fatherhood has actually been. Not the Instagram version with cute moments and proud accomplishments, but the real version where tiny humans systematically destroy every defense mechanism you built to feel safe in the world.

Nobody told me that kids would dismantle my ego. That they'd force me to face every selfish, immature pattern I spent thirty years building. That the gift wasn't the sweet moments, but the forty-five minutes of getting destroyed first.

Without my wife and kids, I would have stayed stuck. I would have remained a child pretending to be an adult. They forced me to grow up, not in the sad, resigned way, but in the real way, where you become more of who you actually are by loving something beyond yourself.

We have our third arriving in a few months. Three years ago, that would have terrified me.
Now? I'm excited!
