Al Sorat Farm

Part of my reason for having a summer camp at Al Sorat Farm was to provide service for working parents whose jobs continue for a good part of the summer so that their children could spend time in a natural setting with animals and be out of doors to explore this part of life for themselves. There is very little green space in Cairo/Giza and we are losing it daily. To be honest, another part of the reason is that every time I do something like this, I learn something that adds to my knowledge and soul. So it isn’t all altruism. We are going into our last week of camp next week and my learning basket is very full.

Quiet time and choice are vital

Learning isn't something that only happens in school or with papers. It is something that happens all the time and that is often remembered best when it is a hands-on activity. All of the things that the children do at the camp teach them things, whether it happens in the midst of a game or a preparation for riding horses. I know that the children remember these lessons because many of the children who come to camp also come out to the farm with their families later, and they tell me something that they have learned in the course of a conversation. I am always delighted.

Why is it dangerous?

Even on a warm day, the temperature inside a parked car can rise dramatically within minutes. Dogs can’t cool themselves like humans, making them highly vulnerable to heatstroke.

Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe

🐾 Never leave your dog alone in a parked car, even for “just a minute.”

🐾 Cracked windows, shade, or parking under a tree are not enough to keep a car cool.

🐾 Whenever possible, avoid traveling with your dog during the hottest hours of the day (10 AM to 3 PM). If you need to travel, early mornings or evenings are much safer.

🐾 Plan ahead and only bring your dog if they’ll be able to come inside with you.

🐾 If they can’t come inside, it’s safest to leave them at home in a cool, comfortable environment.

🐾 Always make sure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water before, during, and after car rides.

🐾 Avoid leaving gas cylinders, lighters, aerosol sprays, or other pressurized or flammable items inside the car. Combined with extreme heat, they can become dangerous and put both you and your dog at risk.

🐾 Before locking your car, always double check the back seat and cargo area. A distracted moment can have devastating consequences.

💛 Remember: If it’s too hot for you to sit in a parked car, it’s too hot for your dog.
