Oscila Fine can be seen as a stylistic variant of Oscila High. The only difference between these two is in the stroke endings. In Fine, they do not follow the implied pen logic: they do not thicken, but rather remain thin throughout. This seemingly small intervention introduces an extra element of finesse.

Oscila Central is based on Low, but invigorates the letterforms with high contrast in all central parts, both horizontally and vertically. Sometimes dubbed internal contrast, this approach became fashionable only in recent years. As the hairlines are exclusively located on the inside, this contrast type does not undermine the sturdiness inherited from Low. Oscila Central is a fresh, eye-catching option, but comes across as less bizarre than Inverse.

In Oscila Inverse, the modulation takes place around a horizontal instead of a vertical axis. It has exactly the opposite contrast to Oscila High: what is thick becomes thin, and vice versa. Such reverse contrast goes back to the so-called Italian, a genre that emerged in type in England in the 1820s. It is the most unusual branch, and as such the most striking option.

Oscila High has distinct contrast, defined by an upright axis: verticals are thick, horizontals are thin. Such high-contrast styles are commonly perceived as refined and elegant. In this regard, Oscila High is much like the Modern types of the late 18th century, think Didot and Bodoni, albeit without serifs. It requires a certain size to really shine.

As its name suggests, Oscila Mid sits about halfway between High and Low. Stems get just as heavy as in High, but hairlines don’t go below a certain width. It is the moderate option, offering some of the sophisticated liveliness of High without running into the limitations of a flickering appearance in smaller sizes.

Oscila Low is the plainest branch: a straightforward sans built from strokes of even thickness. In the bolder weights, it is almost monolinear, with just as much thinning as is necessary to look optically balanced.
