S3, Ep : 55. The Spanish Dollar: The Coin That Ruled Global Trade
You know what I love about history? Sometimes you discover something that makes you think, “Wait… how did I never know this?”
So, imagine we’re having a beer together, and I tell you this:
The mighty American dollar has a Spanish ancestor.
Yep. Seriously.
Long before the dollar became the currency we all know today, there was a Spanish coin called the Real de a Ocho — the famous Piece of Eight.
And this little piece of silver was everywhere.
It was minted in the Spanish Empire, using enormous quantities of silver coming from the Americas, and people were using it to buy and sell things across Europe, the Americas and Asia. In fact, it became one of the first truly international currencies.
And here’s the fun part: when people didn’t have exactly the amount they needed, they could literally cut the coin into pieces. That’s where the famous “pieces of eight” comes from.
But this isn’t just some curious story about an old Spanish coin.
That Spanish silver helped inspire the U.S. dollar, and there are even traces of the Piece of Eight in the way American financial markets once quoted prices in eighths.
And then things get even more interesting.
Because behind this coin is the enormous financial machine of the Spanish Empire, the Habsburgs, the Bourbons, American silver mines, international trade… and eventually the financial world that would lead us toward modern currencies and markets.
So, next time somebody tells you that the dollar is purely an American story, you might want to buy them another beer.
Because there’s a very Spanish story hiding behind it.
