Some wineries stay with you long after you’ve left, and for me (Becs), Macià Batle will always be one of them.

In 2022, while studying for my WSET Diploma in Wines, I had the opportunity to work here, welcoming visitors from all over the world and leading tastings in the bodega. It was an experience that taught me so much and deepened my appreciation for Mallorcan wine, especially the island’s wonderful indigenous grape varieties.

Founded in 1856, Macià Batle is one of Mallorca’s oldest wineries, but one of the things I love most is how it combines wine with art. Every year, a different renowned artist designs the label for their Col·lecció Privada red wine, and the artwork is displayed throughout the winery. It feels as much like an art gallery as it does a winery.

Another reason I often recommend it is how easy it is to visit. Located in Santa Maria, it’s just a short train ride from Palma followed by a ten minute walk, making it one of the most accessible wineries on the island if you don’t have a car.

And if you’re lucky, your visit might even finish with Ramón Servalls Batle, a direct descendant of founder Macià Batle, playing the traditional Mallorcan xeremies. It’s one of those moments that perfectly captures the spirit of Mallorca.

Earlier this summer we headed to Rioja with 20 other wine lovers from around the world for three unforgettable days exploring one of Spain’s most iconic wine regions.

We discovered incredible wines while getting to know the fascinating people and stories behind them. From wandering through historic vineyards and ancient underground cellars to enjoying amazing local food and exploring the vibrant city of Logroño, every day offered something new to learn.

A few things you might not know about Rioja:

🍇 Rioja is divided into three sub-regions — Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, each with its own climate, soils and wine styles.

🍷 Tempranillo is the region’s star grape, but Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, also play an important role in Rioja’s wines and blends.

⏳ Ageing is central to Rioja’s identity. Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva indicate different minimum ageing requirements, reflecting the region’s long tradition of maturing wines before release.

🏆 Rioja was Spain’s first DOCa. It was awarded Denominación de Origen Calificada status in 1991 — the highest level of Spanish wine classification.

🥂 And Rioja isn’t just about red wine. The region produces some exceptional white wines too, particularly Viura-based examples that can develop beautifully complex flavours with oak and bottle age.

There are surprise dinners… and then there are surprise wine tastings in the Mallorcan mountains. 🤍🍷

This beautiful evening was planned as a surprise for the bride, and being trusted to play a small part in such a special celebration genuinely meant so much to us.

There’s something incredibly special about bringing people together around a table. Watching friends slow down, share stories, discover new wines and celebrate someone they love is exactly why we do what we do.

As the sun set over the Tramuntana mountains, we explored a selection of hand picked Mallorcan wines, enjoyed a beautiful grazing table, and spent the evening laughing, learning and creating memories together.

To the wonderful bride and all of her friends, thank you for letting us be part of such a memorable chapter. We hope it’s an evening you’ll all remember for years to come. 🤍

Almost every European wine vine has a little piece of North America underneath it.

In the 1860s, a tiny aphid-like insect called phylloxera crossed the Atlantic from North America and began attacking European grapevines.

It was devastating: the pest eventually destroyed huge parts of Europe’s vineyards, including an estimated two-thirds of the continent’s vines.

Then came the twist: American grapevines had evolved alongside phylloxera, so their roots were naturally resistant.

Scientists discovered they could graft European wine grapes onto American roots, keeping the beloved European varieties while protecting them from the pest.

So your French, Italian or Spanish wine may have a very American "foot” — even though the grapes, wine and centuries-old tradition are unmistakably European. 🍇🇺🇸🇪🇺

🍐 Wine of the Month | Santa Catarina Prensal

Fresh, elegant and unmistakably Mallorcan.

This month’s Wine of the Month is Prensal, made from one of the island’s indigenous grape varieties. Expect ripe apple, pear, with hints of pineapple, a delicate saline note and a gentle bitter almond finish.

Fermented in stainless steel to preserve its freshness before being aged on its lees for added texture, it’s a beautifully balanced wine that’s made to be enjoyed while sitting under the Mallorcan sun.

What makes this bottle even more special is the story behind it. Although Santa Catarina was once known for planting international grape varieties, the family began a remarkable new chapter in 2014, replanting 40 hectares with indigenous Mallorcan vines and helping preserve the island’s winemaking heritage for future generations.

A perfect reminder that some of Mallorca’s greatest wines come from the grapes that have always belonged here.

One of the best parts of working in wine is that you’re always learning. 🍷

Theo spent a long weekend at the Weinakademie Österreich Summer School in Austria, tasting wines, meeting producers and exploring some of Europe’s most fascinating wine regions.

From walk around tastings with Austrian producers and masterclasses on Czech, Greek and Veneto wines, to discovering the elegance of Carnuntum’s Blaufränkisch and visiting incredible wineries including Dorli Muhr and Netzl, every stop offered something new.

These experiences are a huge part of what shapes the tastings we create today. The more we explore, the more stories, wines and recommendations we can bring back to share with you.

Wine has a wonderful way of connecting people, places and cultures and we’re already looking forward to the next adventure. 🤍
