As Harari people's prepares to celebrate Ashura, one of the city's most remarkable traditions continues to remind us of the deep connection between community, culture and coexistence. For over 400 years, Harari's legendary hyenas have shared a unique bond with the people of this ancient city.
Just as families gather to prepare and share Wirshato during Ashura (Wirshato), the evening hyena feeding tradition reflects values that have been passed down through generations sharing, harmony and living together in peace. What may seem extraordinary to the world has become part of Harar's living heritage, where humans and wildlife coexist in a relationship found nowhere else on Earth.
