The concluding and inspiring Closing conference for a 2-year small partnership project 2023-1-LV01-KA210-ADU-000157681 "Culture Goes Outdoors" 26.11.2026, online!
This was the day when culture and nature met, international experiences intertwined, and new ideas for the future were formed. We got fresh insights, stories across 3 countries, reliving how cultural initiatives can thrive in natural environments.
The conference began with an overview of the "Culture Goes Outdoors" project, presented by the project leader Lauma Celma (Latvia). She shared a comprehensive review of the project's goals, tasks, challenges, and the valuable insights gained. Afterwards, participants were introduced to the Finnish experience, presented by Ilze Liepiņa-Naula (Finland). She shared valuable discoveries and compared the Northern European practices with experiences from the South – Malta.
The Maltese experience was especially interesting, with Yorath Abela(Malta) providing inspiring insights into cross-border collaboration and how various cultural activities are implemented. The realization that nature is not only forests, but also cliffs and lagoons, expanded the understanding of what nature truly is. The possibilities for creating culture in nature in Malta were also highlighted.
Next, the Latvian experience was presented by Iveta Pokromoviča, who shared examples of cultural activities in nature and the local challenges faced. She also emphasized the importance of cultural activities not harming nature, demonstrating how creative concepts can live in harmony with nature, such as in the "Ghost Night Trails" event. A special emphasis was placed on Culture Without Harming Nature, with Anita Hanzena (Latvia) presenting the project experience, showcasing how creative cultural concepts can come to life while respecting and protecting natural landscapes.
The conference also gave special attention to the new learning program "Culture Goes Outdoors", which was presented, sparking curiosity about the new educational opportunities and skills participants would gain. At the end of the event, a cooperation memorandum was signed, reaffirming shared values and the commitment to further collaboration.
At the conclusion of the conference, participants engaged in lively discussions, sharing personal reflections, new ideas, and forming meaningful connections that developed throughout the day.

Culture in Nature KA2: Malta

The final mobility of the Erasmus+ KA210-ADU – Small-scale partnerships in adult education project “Culture in Nature” took place in Malta, offering participants a vivid contrast to their previous experiences in Latvia and Finland. On 26 June, at the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Lagoon on Comino Island, the group explored Malta’s unique Mediterranean environment. This was a dramatic shift from Nordic forests to azure seas and limestone cliffs. The opening day provided both cultural immersion and mobility orientation activities for participants.

The following day the group journeyed through the historical heart of Malta, discovering the Three Cities, Valletta’s streets and fortifications. Cultural highlights included visits to family-owned businesses, tasting ftira – Malta’s beloved flatbread – and the engaging Malta 5D experience. The reflective session at the end of the day sparked meaningful discussions about the definition of “nature” and how Malta’s dry yet culturally rich climate shapes local traditions. Participants also continued to refine the evaluation tool – a key element of the training programme that was developed throughout the project.

The third day offered participants the opportunity to immerse themselves in authentic Maltese festivities held outdoors – the traditional feast of Mnarja, which for centuries has honoured Saints Peter and Paul, combining religious devotion with agricultural heritage. Participants experienced folk singing, traditional foods, and even met the President of Malta. In the evening, they attended the Siggiewi festa, where Malta’s dramatic relationship with the sky was revealed through street and church illuminations, fireworks, and the traditional giggifogu. On the fourth day, during their exploration of southern Malta, participants discovered the island’s ancient past at Għar Dalam cave, where remains of the earliest inhabitants and extinct fauna illustrated how limestone geology shaped civilization since megalithic times. The day concluded in Marsaxlokk, with its colourful fishing boats and a traditional Sunday family meal – a typical Mediterranean habit that highlights community and hospitality.

The final day was dedicated to consolidating insights and further developing the evaluation tool, drawing on experiences from all three countries to create a versatile resource for culturally responsible event planning. A visit to Mdina, the ancient capital, provided a contemplative contrast with its quiet, fortified streets and panoramic countryside views, before participants enjoyed a spontaneous night swim. At the project’s conclusion, participants reflected on their transformative journey across three distinct European environments. The contrasts between European landscapes and Malta’s Mediterranean shores broadened their understanding of how nature influences culture and offered new perspectives for rethinking traditional approaches to event planning. The refined evaluation tool became their shared achievement – an accessible and comprehensive resource for creating meaningful cultural experiences that respect both local traditions and the natural environment.

With the final conference scheduled for November, participants look forward to sharing their knowledge and strengthened connections formed during this unique journey of cultural and natural exploration across Europe.
