The Tilapia Fiji Farmers Association (TFA) is proud to share that we have officially commenced our new project β€” RAPID: Research in Agribusiness Partnerships for Innovation and Development! πŸŽ‰

RAPID is an ACIAR-funded initiative (Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research) and we are one of the project’s key partners β€” alongside the Fiji Ministry of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, and the Fiji Beekeepers Association.

This project represents an important step forward for Fiji’s aquaculture and apiculture sector. For TFA, RAPID will focus on strengthening our operational and financial sustainability, as well as deepening collaboration with government agencies β€” working together to bring positive, sustainable progress to Fiji's tilapia sector. We look forward to seeing greater collaboration especially in light of Fiji's Aquaculture Development Plan.

πŸ“Έ In this post, we’re sharing a few photos capturing our journey so far β€” from the early stages of project development in 2023, including:

Our participation at the World Aquaculture Society Conference in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.

Our project development workshop at ACIAR Headquarters in Canberra, with our colleagues from Southern Cross University and the University of Adelaide.

Our attendance to the RAPID Agribusiness Masterclass (2024) in Nadi.

Our attendance to the consultations of the Aquaculture Bill and also the launching of Fiji's Aquaculture Development Plan by the Ministry of Fisheries, Fiji.

Attendance to the PEUMP (IMR, USP) workshop to provide feedback on the Micro-Qualification to Enhance Agricultural and Fisheries Value Chains in the Pacific Islands, Nadi.

Our project inception meeting with partners in Nadi earlier this year.

And most recently, our TFA Executive planning meetings to begin executing activities.

Each milestone reflects our shared vision β€” a stronger, more resilient and innovative tilapia sector for Fiji.

We’re excited about the journey ahead and invite all our members, partners, and friends to follow our updates here as we move forward with RAPID and beyond.

The late Dr. Tim Pickering of SPC played a key role in our collaborations and his dedication to Aquaculture in the region, continues to inspire us.

Our cluster reps in the North, Central and Western Divisions will visit farmers to meet them and collect baseline data as we update our database to serve our farmers well in their area of need. Thanks to the Western reps the visitation has started. Please be reminded that we are not here to give out free bees but to try and map out strategies on how we can improve tilapia production. Let's look at your farm as a vital partner in building the Tilapia sector in Fiji.

Bula vinaka members. We have started the Agibusiness Project on Evaluating alternative approaches to sector development in Pacific Island Countries. Tilapia has been selected as one of the two commodity in this project for the next 3 years. There are three major objectives for us which are;
1. Make Tilapia farming a more profitable business
2. Strengthen the associations to achieve financial and operational self-reliance, and become catalysts for growth and development in the tilapia sector.
3. optimising collaborative industry partnerships to promote innovation, knowledge sharing, and sustainable economic growth in Fiji’s tilapia sector.

We are glad that the executives have started to map strategies for the implementation of the project and we shall continue to update you all as we progress..

Vinaka.
