Dear Human,

Before you spray that w**d killer, please stop and look closely.

Among the plants you call w**ds are tiny flowers that are feeding my family. To you, they may seem untidy or unwanted. To me, they are breakfast, lunch and where our growth lies.

We bees are already struggling. Varroa mites weaken us and spread disease. Strange weather disrupts flowering seasons. Drought and the approaching El Niño will leave us searching harder for food and water.

Please don’t compound our struggle by poisoning what little food remains.

We need nectar for carbohydrates and energy. We need pollen for protein, fats, vitamins and minerals. Together, these foods allow us to raise strong, healthy brood, the next generation of bees upon whom YOUR crops, gardens and plants depend.

When you spray flowers, you may not see us there. But the poison can remain on the leaves, in the pollen, in the nectar and in the water droplets we collect. We carry it home to our hive and unknowingly feed it to our young.

Leave us a few wild corners. Let some small flowers grow.

We are already fighting so hard to survive.

Please don’t poison our food.

Hope you’re smart enough to understand.

A Bee

This is why I do this!
The students enthusiasm was absolutely infectious. We could have spent days exploring the incredible world of bees together.
I love how young people challenge ideas and connect with nature.

Thank you for bringing your energy, open minds, and sense of wonder. We hope you’ll always remember that some of the biggest lessons in life can come from the smallest creatures. 🐝🍯🇨🇦🇫🇯

I’m super fussy about hygiene in the bees!🐝🧼

My hive tool goes from hive to hive, touching wax, propolis, brood boxes, frames and bees, so keeping it clean is just part of good beekeeping practice. 🐝🐝💪🏼

This is how I clean and disinfect mine.

Good apiary hygiene is one of those things that make a big difference, especially when it comes to reducing the risk of carrying pathogens from one hive to another.

Clean hive tool, happy beekeeper! 😂🐝

How often do you clean your hive tool? If you’re not, start doing it now! 🐝❤️🇫🇯🙏🏽

IMPORTANT TO KNOW… 🐝

Wax foundation changes as it ages!

Each time brood develops, tiny silk cocoons are left behind.

Add pollen, propolis, traces of honey and years of use, and the comb gradually becomes darker, thicker and less hygienic.

While bees will happily continue using old comb, as beekeepers it’s our job to give them the healthiest home possible.

Rotating out old, dark brood frames:

🍯 Helps reduce the build-up of pathogens and pests.

🐝 Encourages healthy brood rearing.

✨ Keeps comb strong and productive.

❤️ Supports a healthier colony.

Think of it as renovating a house.

Every now and then, even the hardest-working home deserves a fresh start.

How often do you replace your brood comb?

People constantly ask what we actually look at when we “check the bees”! 🐝

Whilst an untrained eye might just see millions of bees (did you know there are approximately 40,000 to 80,000 bees in a hive?), a beekeeper notices every tiny hexagon because each one tells a story.

ZOOM IN AND HAVE A LOOK!!!!

An egg, no bigger than a tiny, tiny grain of rice, means the queen has been here recently.

Larvae tell us the next generation is growing well and being lovingly fed by nurse bees.

Bright pollen is the colony’s protein source—the pantry that feeds those hungry babies.

Fresh nectar shines in open cells, still waiting for thousands of tiny wingbeats to turn it into honey.

Ripened honey, once dehydrated enough (for us, at around 18% moisture), is sealed beneath a delicate wax cap, ready for the bees’ future… or, if they’ve made enough, a little for us.

Every frame is like opening a living diary.

Is the queen laying? Are the brood healthy? Is there enough food? Are the bees calm? Do we see signs of disease or pests?

One frame can tell us everything!

Once you know what you’re looking at, you’ll never see a honeycomb the same way again. ❤️🇫🇯🐝🙏🏽
