The Lillet Twisted Vesper Cocktail Competition 2013 Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel.

All entries will then be rigorously tested and nine entrants chosen to compete in each of the heats:
Scotland – TBC
Midlands – TBC
London and the South East – TBC

3 finalists from each heat will compete in the final in Paris on TBC

RULES FOR THE LILLET TWISTED VESPER COCKTAIL COMPETITION

“Just a moment. Got it?”

So said James Bond in Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel, Casino Royale. The words, or similar, were uttered again by the most recent incumbent: Mr Daniel Craig in the 2006 movie version. So, if you are a Gentlemen or Gentlewomen of refined taste and possessed if you are of a discerning palate, we task you with re-inventing The Vesper. Though we must, I’m afraid, put a few limits on your creativity to prevent you from straying too far from the beaten track- not a good idea on a Vesper perhaps.

001: Your drink shall consist of a blend of two *spirituous ingredients mixed with Lillet Blanc, Rouge or Rose. The ratio of the spirit to Lillet is entirely at your discretion but the drink shall comprise no less than 1/9th Lillet, as per the original recipe.
*Liqueurs are not permitted

002: The addition or syrups, liqueurs, juices, dairy products etc is not permitted however if you feel a dash of bitters or a few drops of tincture is a judicious addition then this shall be allowed.

003: The choice of garnish is yours, the only stipulation being that it must be edible and that it must bring something to the drink other than simple aesthetics. The option of no garnish is permitted. A FEW TIPS ON WHAT THE JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR:

The drinks will be judged on flavour, appearance and on how well they extol the virtues of Lillet. This competition will have reverence for classic ingredients and classic techniques. Therefore there will be no points available for innovation. The use of foams, caviars, exotic flavours and what have you is permitted but their mere presence will not be rewarded. Such additions must be relevant to your creation. Judges will be looking for elegance in both your creation and in the preparation and the presentation of your creation. There are points available for the name of the drink, Bond style double entendres are not merely permitted but are, indeed, positively encouraged. This competition aims not just to reward the creator of the best drink but to recognise those subtle nuances that separate an outstanding bartender from someone who is merely an accomplished drinks creator.
