At 55, Caroline Brun is finally getting the chance to make the ch*****nes she has always wanted to make.

After decades on the sidelines of her family’s historic domaine in Aÿ, Caroline has taken the reins at Roger Brun, breaking generations of male leadership and bringing an entirely new perspective to the business.

Her ambition is to rethink the expression of Aÿ’s powerful Pinot Noir, introducing greater finesse, freshness and precision, while drawing on her background as an artist to reshape the identity of the domaine.

But her first harvest in charge has been anything but easy. The unprecedented conditions of 2026 have presented immediate challenges, from extreme heat and rapid ripening to the difficult realities of running an independent Ch*****ne business.

I spoke with Caroline about succession, creative freedom, the future of grower ch*****ne and what it means to finally have the authority to shape her family’s legacy.

It’s one of the questions I’m asked most often by people planning a visit to Ch*****ne: What is there for the children to do?

Having spent years exploring the region, I know that Ch*****ne offers far more than cellar tours and tastings. Think immersive museums, underground adventures, beautiful parks, forest walks, boating on the Marne and even amusement parks.
