Long day but great fruit from baby Grenache vineyard. Poured hours into these vines and with more rain there’d be more but happy with how delish they’re tasting. Also picked and destemmed 60 cases of altitude Syrah yesterday.

To kick off the season we picked bush vine (gobelet) Cinsault and Carignan and a little Terret Gris 2 days ago.

There was a lot of driving up and down the mountain to deliver grapes to the winery, and a LOT of lugging and triple handling our cases of picked grapes because the vineyards are gorgeous, rugged, old and hard to access which means triple (or more) handling. Ie we don’t just pick and load it straight into a nice trailer that tips it into our tank in the winery.

But these vines are beauties and worth it for the quality of grapes.

The Fleet Foxes lyric ‘if I had an orchard I’d work till I’m sore’ came to mind a lot.

Sometimes, I have to say, I didn’t agree but at the end of the day having a sneaky beer it does feel good. Just got to do it again and again for next few weeks.

Today is a quieter day and such a blessing to take a pause. A lovely friend has the boys so I’m writing this post. I’ve got 23 mins left so bye from me and onto my lunch.

A juicy light little number will be made from this so watch this space. 🍇✨

Got to entertain yourself somehow when you’ve still got 1.4 tonnes 🍇 to process by hand and it’s 5.40pm. Allez, c’est parti! Vendanges / vintage (harvest and winemaking time) 2026.

It’s now 8.35pm and Henry has heroically taken the baton and is doing the clean-up (😬). 🧽

We’re bottling tomorrow and our back labels hadn’t arrived (critical component). So today we had to drive to the outskirts of Montpellier and back (4 hours) to grab them ahead of our early start tomorrow.

Utterly terrifying journey with a super scary fire burning at a terrifying pace alongside the autoroute outside Narbonne, and another ripping through the beautiful countryside nearby (thankfully far from us, but heartbreakingly close to many others).

Sending our thanks, courage, and hopes for perfectly working planes, hose connections, trucks and communications to the fifty-odd emergency vehicles (and the hundreds more behind them) that I saw racing along the roads and across the skies over the past four hours.

Thank you for what you do.

And to those watching it, and those living through it, our hearts are with you.
❤️❤️

Pruning. It was mostly finished. ✂️But not quite. That tail was going on. (As tails do).

And the jobs, they were not finished, (as they never are) and we were getting more behind.

After much effort the pétillant naturel bottling sesh with friends postponed, the insufficient winery electricity meant a giant wine truck came and went home with another job undone (thankfully lovely people who run it made that less stressful) and all while spring is springing and calling for organic fertilisers to be applied or soil enhancing steps to be taken.

Throw in a kids school dress-up day with nothing to wear and we were slightly going under.

But then these gorgeous, sensationally good folk and our new pal Roz clocked that and told us they were coming round Sunday morning despite the grey skies and despite any protestations.

Hell or high water might have been mentioned.

A day in the old gobelet vines together, a rustled picnic, kids building cubbies outdoors (miraculously happy, normally can’t convince them).

And now we are almost done.

And we have a picture of us all with beanies rising up over our foreheads to prove it. 🧢

The wind is firmly back in our sails. ⛵️

Last week was my bday. I don’t post this to demand a single message of love, truly. (The only person that should be celebrated is my mum!)

But I mention it to give context to this beautiful picture painted for me by one of those women who continue to astonish. And to pause on a moment of subtle change.

The artist is the grandmother of a little girl in Wilbur’s class (4), the mother of a brilliant, talented bunch of English-Australian brothers who live around here, the mother-in-law of two glorious trilingual women — and she and I are becoming friends in our own right.

Even though she did try to scare me off the first time we met by telling me off for leaving the wine press in the street…

Starting again in your 40s isn’t easy. Especially when, because of the language, words sometimes fall out of my mouth in cubes, when in my mind they arrived as clear, flowing wisps. The longing for old friendships and deep connections is always there — and it’s not something you can neatly sum up in an Insta caption (lucky for you, dear reader).

But now that I’m back in the northern hemisphere, my birthday falls once again in early spring rather than a soft Victorian autumn. Both seasons have their own sweet beauty, but like the tiny buds of wildflowers starting to unfurl in the mountains, I feel the very beginning of an unfurling.

And it’s thanks to gestures like this — something imagined and created just for you — that I feel the forming of gentle tendrils of belonging.

So thank you to my new friend and her family that have embraced us, and to all old and new friendships, passing, fleeting or ancient. All so precious. To all those gifts of love, in whatever form, that fill my heart’s cup.

A small reminder, too, to share your creative self. You never quite know where it will land, or how much it might mean.❤️
