We have had an eventful few days. Sunday night this little guy was born. Our heffer Roe had him in the field. I thought she was shouting for him and I found him wett and cold ouside the fence. When we tried to put him back with her she attacked him. A very scary moment. We decided to bring him up to the house to get him warm and feed him a good dose of colostrum. So she could calm down. We put him in the warmest place, our living room. So there we were with a new born calf on the rug by our wood burner. We cleaned and dried him since mama had not done that job. She was obviously freaked out by this being that had emerged after being in intense pain. This happens sometimes in new cow mamas. We set him up for the night in a pen with plenty of straw and 2 heating lamps. Then next day we read up online on how to reintroduce a calf to a mama that showed agression after birth. Mama Roe had started looking and calling for the caf in the field where she had him. So we set her up in a headlock with plenty of food. And let her calm for a bit. Then we brought her the calf. She got really agitated. Shouting, pulling at the lock, thrashing. But started licking the calf right away. So we put him next the her and let her go. She calmed right away and licked him excessively. She bonded successfully! It took him a few days to get the hang of feeding from his mama so we fed him bottles but today he finally managed to nurse from her successfully. I am so happy to see them bonded and healthy after the scary start they had. Thank god for the internet!

After three years of patiently waiting for them to settle in and grow, we are finally able to get our first harvest this year!
