Spent a day with Jérémy Batard of - starting with a geological map, then heading out into the vineyards to see the terroirs behind the wines.

Granite, gneiss and gabbro, all within a relatively small area. One main grape variety — Melon de Bourgogne — and remarkably different expressions of place. Les Prières on granite. Le Besson from older vines on gabbro. Le Moulin de la Gustais on gneiss.

We tasted the wines, talked about soil depth, bedrock, old vines and the way roots find their path through cracks in the rock. The kind of day that reminds you why being in the vineyard changes the way you understand what is in the glass.

Everyone knows Muscadet is great to pair with oysters. Almost nobody knows what lies beneath the vines and what a complexity it can show in good hands.

Tuscany is usually explained in only red wines but Pomino offers another reading of the region — cooler, fresher, more lifted, shaped by altitude and mountain influence.
This post follows the 5th article in our Selvapiana series, dedicated to Pomino: one of Tuscany’s smallest and most historic DOCs, set at the foot of the Apennines.
For Selvapiana, Pomino is not a side note. It is another expression of the same philosophy that defines its Rufina wines: precision, restraint, freshness and a strong sense of place.
Pomino Bianco brings a rare white Tuscan voice through Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

In Chianti, terroir is often discussed. But single vineyards make it visible.

In our latest article we discover Selvapiana’s Bucerchiale and Erchi — two different readings of Chianti Rufina through Sangiovese.

The historical perspective was inspired by .winefoodtravel Marc Millon’s chapter on Selvapiana in his award-winning book “Italy in a Wine Glass”.

Bucerchiale, first produced in 1979 from 100% Sangiovese, challenged the traditional model of Chianti at a time when blending was still the norm.

Erchi, introduced later, adds another dimension — showing how responsive Sangiovese can be to soil, altitude and site.

Together, they create more than a range of wines.
They create a narrative of place.
