Join me and a small group of fellow writers in Rioja this fall for an exciting week devoted to writing, creativity, and taste! From October 11-17, I will lead a small group (no more than six) in an immersive, all-inclusive experience to improve your drinks writing and your tasting. We’ll spend our mornings workshopping your writing, our afternoons visiting Rioja’s top wineries, and our evenings and mealtimes experiencing the vibrant city of Logroño. Click link in bio!

This immersive program is for people who want to take their writing and tasting skills to the next level. If you write (or aspire to write) about wine, spirits, food, travel—whether professionally or personally—this course is for you. Are you an aspiring journalist, essayist, or tastemaker? Are you a sommelier or bartender who wants to expand into creating content? Are you looking to supplement what you’ve learned in your WSET courses? Do you work in wine communications, marketing for a drinks company, or publish a newsletter for an importer, shop, winery, or distillery? Are you an influencer who wants to write? Well, this experience is for you. We will explore all aspects of writing about taste.

This is not a run-of-the-mill “writers retreat” where you’re trapped in some farmhouse for a week, vaguely “being creative.” The focus here is on developing your work, based on your goals. You will get plenty of feedback, both from our group, and one-on-one with me. Every day, there will be group exercises and tastings, as well as time to work on your personal writing (which we will discuss 1:1 before, during, and after the workshop experience).

In Everyday Drinking, I wrote about .vt and her song “Sauvignon Blanc” and what the wine industry might learn from its popularity. LINK IN BIO.

Whatever Rosalía means by bringing sauvignon blanc and religious mysticism into all this, it’s very different than Drake mentioning moscato or Jay-Z name-checking Cristal or even Taylor Swift and her many lyrical wine references.

In Rosalía’s operatic world of LUX, sauvignon blanc is not a luxury to be bragged about, but rather a fundamental, everyday metaphor for a humbler, less material, more spiritual, more loving life. Sauvignon blanc isn’t a wine poured for status, but rather, plentifully, for the soul.

So I finally got around to reading that Vanity Fair article about the orange wine. My thoughts at link in bio.

When you write about drinks for a living, the people in your life eventually ask you to teach them how to make a martini. Sometimes they ask you to show them a “real martini” or a “proper martini” or simply a “gin martini.” But it all means the same thing. Even though your nerdy drinks friends on social media spend a lot of time talking about Negroni variations, the normal people in your life never really ask about a Boulevardier or an Old Pal.

My essay on The Martini, with bunch of recipe variations, link in bio.

Hard to believe it’s been almost a decade since photographer and I were on this amazing wine adventure in the Alps! This feature in , published 9 years ago, was the genesis for my book Godforsaken Grapes. Sometimes, I still can’t believe it actually happened. But also, that was a long time ago, so I guess maybe it’s high time to write another book. Links bio, as always. 📸
