The new releases keep coming! Here are three new bottlings that are available today and that the lucky ones who participated in the fantastic German Armagnac Festival last Saturday in Stuttgart were able to taste.

A few days ago, you saw the release of a rather crazy bottling, the ๐†๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐š๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ž ๐ƒ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐œ Napolรฉon Full Proof Cognac. There's another one! Guillaume Duluc also honored me by offering me a very old Lot of ๐†๐ซ๐š๐ง๐๐ž ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ ๐ง๐ž from the house's "๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐š๐๐ข๐ฌ" cellar, the existence of which I was unaware. Impressed by its elegance, intensity, balance, and length, I had no choice but to bottle this ๐‹๐จ๐ญ ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŽ, a true family treasure. If you liked the Saunier Lot 75, you'll love this Lot 70.

A few years ago, I made an improvised visit to a tiny ๐๐š๐ฌ ๐€๐ซ๐ฆ๐š๐ ๐ง๐š๐œ producer, completely impossible to find without some research, as there were no signs or website. Impressed by the overall quality of their production, I was eager to return and taste it directly in the cellar. ๐ƒ๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐๐ž ๐๐ข๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐ž comprises less than 2 hectares of ๐๐š๐œ๐จ vineyards, producing vintage Bas Armagnacs since 1979 by two brothers: Alain and Claude Dupouy. From the outset, they chose to reject blending and topping up, preserving the authenticity of the work in the vineyard and the winemaking process. Since 1999, Alain has continued the adventure on his own. Two ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ก๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ข๐ ๐œ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐š๐ซ๐ฌ, near the family home with its typical Landes-style timber framing, ensure optimal aging. It is perhaps the most exciting cellar I've visited in Bas Armagnac. This ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ” is, in my opinion, exceptional: characterful, fruity, subtly oaky, and elegant. Believe me, there will be other vintages to release this year from Authentic Spirits...

And here is our first collaboration with Romain Le Passeur. Founded in 2023 by Romain Duteuil, a nomadic and independent Armagnac bottler, Le Passeur works closely with producers. This Tรฉnarรจze Armagnac comes from the cellars of ๐‡๐žฬ๐ฅ๐žฬ€๐ง๐ž ๐…๐š๐ ๐ž๐ญ at ๐ƒ๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐๐ž ๐‹๐š ๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž. In 1968, Georges Faget realized his dream by purchasing a post house dating back to the 18th century to create his vineyard. Domaine de La Poste was born. Starting in 1970, the traveling distiller ๐‚๐š๐ฌ๐ข๐ฆ๐ข๐ซ ๐Œ๐ข๐œ๐ก๐š๐ฅ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ค๐ข set up his copper still on the property at the end of each November. For two decades, Georges meticulously distilled and aged his Armagnacs, which he never sold. They were his treasure. After 1990 and the death of his wife, he lost his passion for distilling and ceased his Armagnac production. Upon his death in 2011, his children, including his youngest daughter Hรฉlรจne, inherited his life's work. We have the rare privilege of having been granted permission by Hรฉlรจne to come and sample the Armagnac in her cellar. It is the first time, and not without a certain emotion, that she has sold an Armagnac made by her father, Georges. We selected this ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ— cask which really convinced us with its characteristic ๐ฉ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ๐ž.

Let's start with a surprise discovery while I was looking for Tรฉnarรจze Armagnacs. Paul ๐ƒ๐ฎ๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ข๐ž๐ฎ was a producer of Armagnac with astonishing methods: he aged his casks outdoors, directly exposed to the elements, instead of keeping them in a closed cellar. He observed that aging in the open air resulted in a higher quality eau-de-vie, simply topping it up with a single cask from the same vintage, without ever adding any additives or reducing the spirit. Today, the estate no longer exists, but Paul's son, Bernard, has taken over the selling of the Armagnacs, available in three age statements (from 7 to 18 years old). Practicing also farming, the estate produced ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ง๐ž๐ฌ, and a surplus of this production was fermented and distilled in ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ“, then aged in ๐จ๐š๐ค ๐œ๐š๐ฌ๐ค๐ฌ. After 20 years, the stock was transferred to a stainless steel cask. Bernard is now retired. I was fortunate enough to meet him and taste his three Armagnacs, including a stunning 18-year-old Hors d'ร‚ge (that I'll be featuring soon) as well as this very old plum brandy. Given the quality of this eau-de-vie, I couldn't resist insisting on acquiring a few bottles to share with you.

Let's move on to ๐†๐ซ๐š๐ง๐๐ž ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ ๐ง๐ž now. After bottling Lot 84 for Amateur Spirit a few months ago, Guillaume Duluc also told me about a very young cask from his production, exceptional for its aromatics and color (rich and dark). I had already bottled a cask strength VSOP from the 2019 harvest. Since this one was old enough to qualify for the "๐๐š๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ž๐จ๐ง" age statement (over 8 years), I naturally wanted to create another special ๐œ๐š๐ฌ๐ค ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก edition (๐Ÿ•๐ŸŽ% ๐€๐๐•!), with a rather special label for the occasion, reflecting its character...

Finally, I have been searching for exceptional, unreduced fruit ๐ž๐š๐ฎ๐ฑ-๐๐ž-๐ฏ๐ข๐ž for a long time. Taking advantage of the trip to the German Armagnac Festival last year, I scheduled a few visits to producers from ๐€๐ฅ๐ฌ๐š๐œ๐ž. Fully committed to biodynamic agriculture, Domaine ๐‚๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐๐ข๐ง๐ง๐ž๐ซ has been writing its family history since 1770 and covers 11 hectares of vineyards. They also distill their own spirits to make the most of the vineyard's by-products and the fruit from their orchards. After explaining my desire to select unreduced eaux-de-vie, Bรฉatrice Binner gave me a tour of the attic, where dozens of demijohns have been aging for years. It was there that I fell in love with a ๐๐จ๐ง-๐‚๐ก๐ซ๐žฬ๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ง ๐ฉ๐ž๐š๐ซ ๐ž๐š๐ฎ-๐๐ž-๐ฏ๐ข๐ž, well-known as ๐–๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐š๐ฆ๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐ž๐š๐ซ. From the ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’ ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ, the pears were hand-picked, sorted, stemmed, and pressed. After natural fermentation and double distillation in the estate's copper still, it was ๐š๐ ๐ž๐ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐ฃ๐จ๐ก๐ง๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ๐ฒ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ข๐œ, all without additives or filtration (so, ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ% ๐€๐๐•), resulting in the purest expression of the fruit. A huge favorite, quite simply the best pear eau-de-vie I've ever tasted.

Why the weathervane on the front label? On the various visits made to the domaine, the weathervane with the pigeon perched on top always seemed to be watching over the house, the vines, and the dovecote, acting like a witness to past and present โ€“ and perhaps gazing into the future. It stood out on several occasions and so seemed like a good fit this front label.

It's been a few months since I released my last Calvados, a Pays d'Auge. I thought it was time for a new profile, why not with pear, and therefore a Domfrontais. After visiting a few estates (old, good Calvados isn't so easy to find), I came across a cask of ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ% ๐ฉ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ฌ ๐‚๐š๐ฅ๐ฏ๐š๐๐จ๐ฌ from 2005 at ๐…๐š๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž ๐†๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ๐๐จ๐ง (also known as ๐‹๐š ๐‚๐š๐ฏ๐ž ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐๐ž). The Guesdon family has been cultivating apples and pears for three generations on tall trees, some of them centuries old, located in the areas of two Calvados appellations: Calvados AOC and Calvados AOC Domfrontais. This rare ๐‚๐š๐ฅ๐ฏ๐š๐๐จ๐ฌ ๐ƒ๐จ๐ฆ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ฌ (most blends contain 30-40% pears) comes from the ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ’ ๐ฉ๐ž๐š๐ซ ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ. The perry was distilled in May 2005 in the family's column still, which is also mobile. This late distillation, using a longer fermented must, yields richer, fattier spirits. A true curiosity with a very floral profile!

We remain in Normandy at the excellent domaine ๐Œ๐š๐ง๐จ๐ข๐ซ ๐๐ž ๐Œ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ, run by the ๐†๐ข๐š๐ซ๐ family. I had bottled two superb Pays dโ€™Auge Calvados there: a 1973 selected by the jury of Amateur Spirit and a 1984 selected by Aficionados. Patrice Giard had let me taste his last few liters of his oldest ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž๐š๐ฎ, a ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ vintage. It was made from a blend of two-year-old Calvados and unfermented apple juice obtained immediately after pressing, then aged in oak barrels since 2000. This exceptional and ๐ž๐ฑ๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ซ๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“-๐ฒ๐ž๐š๐ซ-๐จ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž๐š๐ฎ is perhaps the oldest ever bottled!

Let's head to the Gers region now. One thing I love about searching for new Armagnacs is discovering new estates, the kind you can't find online. The ultimate find is an estate that doesn't even have a sign advertising the sale of ๐€๐ซ๐ฆ๐š๐ ๐ง๐š๐œ. And that's precisely the case with ๐ƒ๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐๐ฎ ๐“๐žฬ๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ž๐ญ. This property adjoins the Chรขteau de Mormรจs, built by the Count of Barbotan in 1750. It was on this estate, acquired by his grandfather in 1942, that ๐†๐žฬ๐ซ๐š๐ซ๐ ๐’๐ฉ๐จ๐ž๐ซ๐ซ๐ฒ began his career as an Bas Armagnac producer, cultivating ๐‚๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฆ๐›๐š๐ซ๐ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐”๐ ๐ง๐ข ๐๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐œ grapes. Distilled at 52% by the Panjas cooperative in a 1974 Geimdor column still, this ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ‘ ๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ ๐ž then aged in a very humid cellar, giving it a surprisingly mature rancio character for its young age, reminiscent of a Grande Champagne Cognac.

Why the jeep on the front label? Well, this is one of Guillameโ€™s current means of getting around. In fact, when visiting the domaine recently during this yearโ€™s harvest, we traveled from one parcel of vines to another in this exact vehicule, a jeep made in 1943 and which was active during WWII. Needless to say, there was no debate as to what was going on this front label.

Whatโ€™s with the curious looking head sculpture on the front label? When visiting the domaine, I could not look away from this figure positioned on the wall near the alambics. What the front label does not show is that the year 1948 is carved just below the head. The Giard family is not 100% sure of how or why it got there, but they suspect it could have been the head of the mason who installed the pot stills.

When I bottled the Prenellerie 1983 for Amateur Spirit, another younger barrel (well, others...) caught my attention for its wild side. Finally, I offer it, always with the aim of exploring a little more the Bons Bois vintage, with which you never get bored.
