South Africa. Bordeaux. History in a glass.
One of the wines featuring in our upcoming Cellar Selection tastings is the legendary Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2015.
Why am I so excited to share this wine with you all?
Because this isn’t just another highly rated red wine.
In 2018, Paul Sauer 2015 became the first South African wine ever to receive a perfect 100-point score from Tim Atkin MW, who described it as “one of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted.”
That score wasn’t awarded because the wine was fashionable or rare.
It was awarded because it represents something far more important: a wine region reaching world-class maturity.
Produced on the slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, Paul Sauer is Kanonkop’s iconic Bordeaux blend, traditionally made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Named after former owner Paul Sauer, the wine has been one of South Africa’s benchmark fine wines since the early 1980s.
The 2015 vintage is regarded as one of the Cape’s greatest modern vintages. Perfect growing conditions, meticulous vineyard work and the expertise of Abrie Beeslaar combined to create a wine of remarkable concentration, structure and longevity.
But tasting a wine like this isn’t about chasing scores.
It’s about understanding:
• Why Stellenbosch can compete with the finest Cabernet blends in the world
• How climate, soils and winemaking shape style
• What true age-worthy structure tastes like
• Why some wines become historic landmarks for an entire country
These are exactly the conversations we have during our Cellar Selection sessions.
Two hours long to have a deep dive into the stories, regions, producers and tasting techniques that help bring great wines to life.
If you’ve ever wanted to taste one of South Africa’s most important wines alongside fellow enthusiasts, I’d love you to join us.
There are two opportunities to try this wine. Details are on the website.
