Hillside Beef and Lamb

Hillside Beef and Lamb 100% Pasture fed Sheep, Traditional Hereford and Dexter Beef cattle, farmed on a regenerative, high nature value farm in Monmouthshire.
(1)

We keep Pedigree Dexter Beef Cattle and traditional Welsh sheep breeds on our small farm near Abergavenny. They are reared on grass alone, with no concentrates to boost growth rates. Then we take them to the abattoir ourselves, they are expertly butchered and packed and then we deliver them to our customers, in and around South East Wales.

Free Range outdoor, Pasture reared Gloucester Old Spot pork available.
We had a really good run on the pork last weekend. If you'd like to get some delivered on our next run, we are taking orders now. Shoulder, Leg, Belly and Sausages are all available to order, but we need to know asap so we can let the butcher know.
Delivery or collection will be the weekend of the 27th June. These will be our last ones for a while as we're waiting for new piglets to arrive.

I have some concerns.
Where have all our swallows gone? Last year we had ten pairs return to the farm, in the Spring. Between them they reared and successfully fledged somewhere between 90 and 100 chicks. They hatched on average 5 chicks per brood.
This year, I think we may only have 4 pairs, and the two nests I can see, only have three chicks in each. I will have a better idea next week, when we have our bat survey done, and I'll be able to check the other nesting area they use. I also feel like there are less bats about than usual when I take the dogs out in the evening.
Is it just us?
Have you seen many swallows about this year?

This is a golden ringed dragonfly. They are a voracious carnivore and hunter of other insects. They are harmless to us, although they can nip if they are handled or feel threatened. We want to encourage as many dragonflies as we can on the farm because they help keep nuisance flies off the cattle and sheep.
There was an interesting study done a year or two back where someone was using a fascinator on their horse with fake dragonflies above the horses head, and it kept flies away from the horse.
So what's better than a fascinator with fake dragonflies? The real thing of course.
So what do they need?
Well they need running acidic water where they can breed. They like small clean heathland streams free of run off pollution and chemicals. They need open grassland and moorland to hunt. They like sunshine and open areas so not too many trees, in their hunting area. But tall grasses make excellent perches for them to hunt from, and they need healthy insects to hunt.
The cattle provide exactly that kind of habitat on our front fields. We don't use insecticides on our cattle or sheep. I don't want to eat food that's been dosed with chemicals, neither do you, and neither do these guys.
It's a slow process to build numbers up though. If this one successfully breeds this year, it could be up to 5 years before we see any progeny on the farm. The larvae are slow growing in the water, where they hunt anything up to the size of tadpoles and even small fish!
Just one of the reasons we farm the way we do, od rather look at these swooping across the farm than a bottle of insecticide any day of the week.

We've made up all our pork orders and we have had a couple of cancellations, so we have a couple of shoulders around 2kg in weight, some packs of pork chops, a few belly slices and some packs of sausages. Everything is £12 per kg.
These are from our Gloucester Old Spot pigs who've lived free ranging outside in our orchard. They've had a soya and palm oil free diet. It looks absolutely fantastic pork I have to say.
If you'd like to order anything, drop us a message, or give Julia a call.

We've got a serious evening of pork packing ahead of us. Have you ordered for delivery this weekend?
