🌱 What does a strong local food system actually look like?

The Welsh Government's best estimate is that Welsh production currently meets only around 6–7% of the fruit and vegetables we consume in Wales.

Growing more locally is part of the answer. But we also need the infrastructure that gets that food from growers to local people.
That’s where Porthi Aber’s local Bwyd Dyfi Hub comes in. Each week we bring produce from local and regional growers together in one place, giving producers a route to market and making it much easier for customers to choose local food.

Interested in knowing more? The Marches Real Food & Farming Convergence in Newtown, 1–2 October brings growers, farmers, food businesses and community organisations together to explore how we build stronger local food systems.

Producing local food is only half the job — we also need ways of getting it onto local plates. 🌿

🌱 Sut olwg sydd ar system fwyd leol gref mewn gwirionedd?

Amcangyfrif gorau Llywodraeth Cymru yw mai dim ond tua 6-7% o'r ffrwythau a llysiau rydyn ni'n eu bwyta yng Nghymru y mae cynhyrchu Cymru ar hyn o bryd yn bodloni.

Mae tyfu'n fwy lleol yn rhan o'r ateb. Ond mae angen y seilwaith arnom hefyd sy'n cael y bwyd hwnnw gan dyfwyr i bobl leol.
Dyna le mae Hwb Bwyd Dyfi lleol Porthi Aber. Bob wythnos rydym yn dod â chynnyrch gan dyfwyr lleol a rhanbarthol at ei gilydd mewn un lle, gan roi llwybr i gynhyrchwyr i'r farchnad a'i gwneud hi'n llawer haws i gwsmeriaid ddewis bwyd lleol.

Oes gennych chi ddiddordeb mewn gwybod mwy? Mae Cydgyfeirio Bwyd a Ffermio Go Iawn y Gororau yn y Drenewydd, 1-2 Hydref yn dod â thyfwyr, ffermwyr, busnesau bwyd a sefydliadau cymunedol ynghyd i archwilio sut rydym yn adeiladu systemau bwyd lleol cryfach.

Dim ond hanner y swydd yw cynhyrchu bwyd lleol - mae angen ffyrdd o'i gael ar blatiau lleol hefyd. 🌿

🚜 Sharing machinery to help grow more Welsh food

A new machinery-sharing scheme is being developed across North Wales, giving smaller growers access to specialist horticultural equipment that can simply be too expensive for an individual farm or market garden to buy.

Closer to home, Cultivate and Bwyd Powys Food in Newtown have developed the Powys Machinery Ring, allowing horticultural growers in North Powys to hire specialist equipment through a shared system.

It’s a simple idea, but potentially an important one. If we want more locally grown fruit and vegetables, growers need access not just to land and markets, but to the practical infrastructure that allows them to produce food efficiently and at a viable scale.

Sharing equipment means less capital tied up in machinery that might only be needed occasionally — and could make it much easier for smaller growers to expand.

Mae'n syniad syml, ond o bosibl yn un pwysig. Os ydym eisiau mwy o ffrwythau a llysiau a dyfir yn lleol, mae angen mynediad at dyfwyr nid yn unig i dir a marchnadoedd, ond i'r seilwaith ymarferol sy'n caniatáu iddynt gynhyrchu bwyd yn effeithlon ac ar raddfa hyfyw.
Mae rhannu offer yn golygu llai o gyfalaf wedi'i glymu mewn peiriannau a allai fod eu hangen yn achlysurol yn unig - a gallai ei gwneud yn llawer haws i dyfwyr llai ehangu.

Big news from the Bwyd Dyfi team! 🎉💚

As many of you know, our wonderful Cathie will soon be taking some time off to welcome her baby and enjoy maternity leave. We're so excited for her, and we know you'll miss her smiling face at the hub!

But don't worry! We've got you covered.
Over the last few weeks, we've been showing Megs the ropes. She's stepping in to look after the veg and fruit boxes, deliveries, and collections while Cathie is away. She's already getting to know the hub, the growers, and most importantly, our lovely customers and volunteers.

And Cathie won't be far away! She'll still be popping in and around Bwyd Dyfi, so you'll definitely see her from time to time.
So please give Megs a warm welcome when you see her. 💚
