🚜 FARM JOURNAL: We can turn our hand to just about anything…

Another job done! Building a shelter.

Mike and one of our regular weekly workers have been getting stuck in together – measuring, cutting, building, working things out and, as is often the way on a farm, learning a few things along the way.

Because farming isn’t just about feeding animals and mucking out.

It’s noticing what needs done before it needs done. It’s knowing the animals will need somewhere to get out of the weather and making sure it’s there waiting for them. It’s preparation, problem-solving and getting on with the job.

And while a shelter is being built, so are skills.

Mike brings years of farming knowledge. Our young worker brings another pair of hands and a willingness to learn. Both work it out together.

Teaching. Teamwork. Practical skills. A bit of head scratching. Probably a few choice words when something doesn’t quite fit. 😂

Just another ordinary day on the farm.

And that’s rather the point. 🐑🔨

We are now officially FULLY BOOKED – and we’re really looking forward to welcoming you all to Inclusive Farm Scotland at MacRobert and showing you what we’ve been getting up to.

Wellies might be advisable. 👀😉

It is a farm, after all… and some members of the team are considerably less concerned about mud than others. 🐷😂

And they all come to Mike - they associate him with food! But more importantly, they associate him with cuddles and getting attention. These are social animals ans they love interaction.

Like we have said before, Mike uses his senses very keenly to ensure the animals are healthy. Because when you don't have sight, you use what you do have... and probably notice problems before anyone else does because we are under the impression that "seeing is believing" - a notion which simply isn't accurate! Eh Mike?! 🤣

Farm Journal: Important Business

Who knew a carpet could make such a difference?

The barn scrubbed up pretty well for a recent visit from the local Rotary Club. Even the hay bales were behaving themselves.

But there’s something about this big empty space that you probably wouldn’t think twice about.

The echo.

For Mike, it’s a nightmare.

Mike is blind, so sound tells him a huge amount about what’s going on around him – where people are, where things are happening and what direction things are coming from.

In the barn, sound hits the concrete floor, the walls and the roof and comes straight back at you. If a few people are talking at once, chairs are moving and there’s the usual background noise of a working farm, it becomes really difficult for Mike to work out where everyone is. Even having a conversation takes more concentration than it should.

We’ve learned quite a lot on this farm about accessibility. Quite often the things that make the biggest difference aren’t complicated at all.

In this case, we need a carpet.

A great big, barn-sized carpet.

It will deaden the sound, stop so much of the echo and make the whole space far easier for Mike – and others – to use.

How ridiculously simple is that?
