Portnellan Farm

Portnellan Farm Family-run organic beef farm on the secluded south shore of Loch Lomond providing self catering, glamping, moorings, speedboat tours and water sports.

Portnellan is a small organic family run farm on the south-eastern shore of Loch Lomond. The focus of the farm is producing quality Aberdeen Angus beef which we sell directly from the farm. Over the last few years the farm has diversified and now offers luxury 4* self-catering accommodation, moorings, speedboat tours and paddle board hire. Our latest project is to create a glamp site on the loch s

hore which will open later this year! Visit our website for more information! www.portnellanfarm.co.uk

Portnellan basking in the warm evening sunshine.

It’s been a busy week on the farm with the arrival of several new calves, the daily routine of mucking out sheds and feeding, moving cows from paddock to paddock and the inevitable issues with water troughs blocking as debris and the occasional newt swim down the pipe.

Today we hosted a lovely family visiting Scotland for the first time from the USA for a farm tour followed by a spin round the loch on the boat, punctuated by a short stop on to sample the local whisky and haggis flavoured crisps.

Happy Friday everyone, enjoyed the weekend!

Did you know that you can hire kayaks and paddleboards from the farm? It’s only a small business which means we have limited kit but the bonus is that we tend to be quieter than hot-spots like Balloch and Luss!

There are several islands within easy paddling distance, the most popular being Inchmurrin which is only a 30 minute paddle and has some wonderful beaches and even a pub.

It’s been great to see the boards and boats getting plenty of use now that the weather has perked up and with more sunshine forecast please feel free to get in touch if you’d like to get out for a paddle!

The good weather continues and the ground has finally dried up enough to get the slurry spread! Being organic means that we don’t use chemical fertilisers, so that muck is incredibly important for increasing our soils fertility and growing plenty of grass for next winters silage. Given the price of fertiliser these days I’m not sure who’d want to buy it anyway, and if you listen to the news, most of it seems to be on a cargo ship in the straight of Hormuz. 🤔

UPDATE: The application has been withdrawn due to the high likelihood of an Osprey nesting on the helipad and therefore preventing drilling and wedding operations for 6 months of the year. Also the neighbours complained. Something about spoiling Mum and Dads view.

Given the ongoing situation in the Middle East and the horrific price of red diesel, we’ve come to the conclusion that the most economic option is to drill for oil in the loch. The cost of the project is estimated to be around £25B, which means we should make a return on investment after filling the tractor 2 or 3 times.

Planning permission is expected to be granted shortly by the National Park Authority on the condition that a minimum of two bat boxes are installed and that the rig can be used for weddings on a Saturday afternoon.
