DAY 3 | WESTON LAWNS 🏆

Day 3 started with Ailby Calypso in the 95cm Amateur.

The course had been changed, with some new fences added, and unfortunately Tigga had a silly spook at fence 2 — a set of black planks right next to the entrance.

He jumped it second time and we carried on around the course, until we came to the blue double, which was a tight turn back on itself.

I knew he wasn’t going to jump it, having already trouble at the fence as a single and previous history with it before, so unfortunately that meant elimination.
But actually, that made the decision for the rest of the show for me.

We went into the 1m Open in the other arena, where he warmed up well despite the rain starting to spit, and went into the ring feeling happy and confident.

He absolutely stormed around for a double clear and 3rd place, putting us in the money! 🥉💰

A much better round and exactly what I wanted to see from him.

Then it was Kansas IIZ’s turn in the 1.10 Amateur.

It was quite a technical track with plenty of turn-backs and twists, but Kansas warmed up well (if a little fresh!) and went in feeling confident.

He jumped a fabulous double clear, including a cheeky little turn and burn in the jump-off — straight back towards the water tray of all the fences! 😂

A few others clearly decided they liked our idea, because once we’d done it, a few more people attempted the same turn and we gradually got knocked down the placings to 5th.

Then it was back out for the 1.15 Members Cup.

We had a massive stride to the first fence and were off!

Unfortunately, he had the unluckiest of poles at fence 4. Rather than chase another result, I decided to use the rest of the round as a confidence and schooling exercise.

That meant picking up a few time penalties, but it gave us some really valuable experience around another technical, bigger track.

We eventually finished 6th.

So, not a perfect day on paper, but actually a really positive one for both horses.
And that’s what these stay-away shows are all about — putting the miles in, learning, improving and coming home with more experience than we arrived with.

DAY 1 | WESTON LAWNS STAY-AWAY SHOW 🏆🌧️

Day 1 on Friday started with Ailby Calypso in the 90 Open in the Weston Arena. A quieter arena for him to help his confidence.

He was a little spooky at the fillers and unfortunately a stop at each resulted in an elimination. Not the start we wanted, but rather than dwell on it, we went straight back into the 1m Open.

And what a difference.

This time he stormed around the arena, didn’t look at a single filler and jumped a lovely, confident round. We just had 4 faults at the very first fence after he spooked in the corner, but I was so pleased with how he came back and fought through it.

Then it was Kansas IIZ’s turn, starting in the 1.10 Amateur.

He warmed up fresh and bouncy but went into the main arena and jumped a lovely, confident round to finish 8th with a double clear.

Then came the 1.15 Members Cup… and the weather decided to make things interesting. 🌧️⛈️

The heavens opened, thunder was grumbling, lightning was striking around us and we were absolutely soaked to the skin. Then came so much rain in such a short space of time that the arena flooded, with huge lakes forming around the course.

I’ve never ridden Kansas in conditions quite like it, and honestly, it felt more like an eventing Grand Prix than a showjumping round!

We were first to go, and despite the incredibly challenging conditions, Kenny was absolutely phenomenal.

He wasn’t phased by the water lakes and just kept jumping. He gave me absolutely everything and produced a double clear to take the lead.

He held the lead until the penultimate rider, who just managed to pip us off the top spot, leaving us 2nd. 🥈

But honestly, I couldn’t have been happier with him.He gave me absolutely everything and showed so much confidence.

And to top it off, the result also meant we qualified for the 1.10m second rounds and achieved our qualifying score for next years Nationals 🎉

One horse had a slightly rocky start, one horse had to swim his way around a 1.15… but not a bad way to start our stay-away show!

Yesterday Ailby Calypso headed to Elms Farm 🏇🏼💙

We went straight into the 95cm Amateur and he jumped a lovely, steady double clear. He felt confident and jumped around beautifully, finishing 3rd 🥉 and picking up his double clear qualification for the Second Rounds.

I then decided to step him up to the 1m, and I couldn’t have been happier with how he approached it. He jumped another lovely, confident round, with just one pole coming out of the double — possibly rider error! 🙈 He was spot on everywhere else and, most importantly, felt really happy and confident.

It’s so nice to feel him starting to believe in himself again. We’re definitely heading in the right direction ❤️

Weekend throwback

With it being Nationals week, I couldn’t not throw it back to last year’s British Showjumping National Championships!

Both stallions had qualified for the 1.05m Championship, and we headed to Stoneleigh with absolutely no expectations — just excited to be there and see what we could do.

Kansas IIZ had a fantastic start, jumping double clear in the 1m Open warm-up and finishing 10th in a very competitive class. Unfortunately, a rider error in the Championship cost us a pole and ultimately kept us out of the jump-off. One of those rounds where you know there was more to give!

Then it was Ailby Calypso’s turn.

He had two poles in the warm-up — one after being distracted and spooking at the white barriers , and the other because we were a little too quick through the jump-off!

But when it mattered, he absolutely delivered.

Tigga jumped a phenomenal double clear in the Championship and was sitting 2nd at the halfway stage.

He was eventually bumped down to 11th, just missing out on the mounted prize giving, but what an achievement — one of only 12 double clears from 168 competitors!

Looking back, it’s amazing to se how we’ve have progressed since then.

And now, one year on, we were back at Nationals… with Kenny having qualified for the 1.15m Members Cup.

The bit you don’t always see…

The British Showjumping National Championships isn’t just about getting in the ring.

There’s the travelling, settling into a new stable (with new friends!), getting the horses comfortable in a new environment and making sure there’s plenty of bedding down — Sundownequine is my choice — before keeping them fed, hydrated and as settled as possible amongst all the excitement and atmosphere.

Kenny took it all in his stride at Stoneleigh and was an absolute delight to handle from start to finish, especially considering he’d also been covering mares! 😂

From his stable overlooking the jumping rings, to his power-walk around the showground on Tuesday, he seemed to enjoy taking everything in and watching the world go by.

And then there’s everything that happens around the actual jumping — the early starts, the nerves, walking the courses, warm-up, cooling down and, of course, plenty of cuddles!

These are the moments that often don’t make the highlight reel, but they’re such a huge part of getting a horse settled, happy and ready to perform at a championship.

British Showjumping National Championships 2026 🇬🇧🏆

A few of our favourite moments from Kansas IIZ’s week at Stoneleigh, competing in the 1.10m Open and 1.15m Members Cup.

Not every championship ends with the result you dream of, but every one leaves you with lessons and memories.

We came home with a top-10 placing in the 1.10m Open, invaluable championship experience, and plenty of motivation to qualify again next year.

The British Showjumping National Championships

Kansas qualified for the 1.15m Members Cup, so we headed to Stoneleigh for an exciting few days.

The plan was to jump the 1.10m Open on Tuesday as a refresher after a summer competing on grass, but as we all know, horse life had other ideas! The delay meant we missed the class, so Kenny enjoyed a walk around the showground before settling into his stable with a perfect view of the rings.

Wednesday started with the 1.10m Open as our warm-up. Kenny was feeling fresh but jumped a lovely double clear, even saving us at fence 3 when we arrived a little long. We were sitting 5th halfway through the class and finished a fantastic 7th in a very competitive field—a brilliant confidence boost before the championship.

The 1.15m Members Cup was a strong, technical track. A fence crashing down in the neighbouring ring spooked and distracted us on the approach to fence 1, causing a stop but Kenny recovered brilliantly and was absolutely flying, jumping out of his skin.

Then came the water tray…

I didn’t see the stride and, let my own nerves get the better of me, and made a mistake that cost us. Kenny deserved better because he was giving me absolutely everything.

We came home with a top-10 placing in the warm-up class, invaluable championship experience, and even more determination to qualify again next year. The fire is well and truly lit!
