We're getting ready for the last 2 weekends before Christmas up at the Three Turnips...

If you're looking for gifts, Lydia has been making all sorts of wonderful things. Including (but not limited to):

- Bundle dyed Devon Close wool yarn using 10 different dye plants,
- Hampen beeswax candles,
- Calendula and honey & beeswax soaps,
- Delicious fig leaf and honey syrup,
- Medlar, apple and rosemary jelly,
- Generous hampers, and more!

The shop is open at the usual times, 10-5 Thursdays and Fridays, 10-1 on Saturdays. Hopefully we'll see you there!

One good thing about having so much rain, the newly dug newt ponds are bang full of water. These are ponds, four and five created by the Newt Conservation Partnership following the three others situated in the mixed woodland that is in the background of the photo. All the ponds are created on islands of thick clay surrounded by our otherwise free draining Cotswold brash and are either spring fed or from rainwater. Newts also need areas of tussocky grasses and stones to hide under. The plan is to encourage the Greater Crested Newt offspring born in the wood ponds to move uphill to find new territories. There is a sixth pond planned for next year further up the valley on another wet patch of ground. Nowadays they are able to confirm the presence of newts by simply taking it sample of water and doing a DNA test!

Up at The Three Turnips, a trial plot of......can you believe......budgie millet! Our wonderful accountant is always looking to help us find new potentially lucrative crops to grow on the farm. Apparently all budgie millet is imported all the way from China!! Being a budgie fancier himself, our accountant wants to source UK sustainable grown seed grown without chemicals. This trial plot was planted very late in May in horrid cold wet conditions but has managed to produce some reasonable sprays of seed so we are quite hopeful to have a go on a larger scale next year so watch this space all you bird fanciers🦜🦜🦜

Our aim for Lower Hampen Farm is to provide an environment where nature is allowed to flourish and thereby help to support a sustainable, diverse system of agriculture. In this holistic, regenerative approach we wish to benefit all life, building soil health, contributing to cleaner air and improving water quality. We operate a low input, low output farming system and constantly strive to reduce our energy requirements and aim to become carbon negative.

Our homegrown and handmade produce is available to the public from the pop-up farm shop “The Three Turnips” on Saturdays 10am–1pm in the lean-to shed at the Grain Store. If you'd like to support the farm directly, we offer memberships with perks and discounts on farm produce.
