The Times’ 75 Best Restaurants in Scotland!

We’re incredibly proud to see two businesses based on the estate recognised in this list, both showcasing our estate-reared meat on their menus.

The Kinneuchar Inn has been part of the estate since 2016, while BÆRN joined us at Bowhouse in 2022. It’s rewarding to see their hard work and passion for food celebrated.

Congratulations, too, to our neighbours over Balgove Larder, recognised for their much-loved Steak Barn.

As Organic September draws to a close, we’re reflecting on what organic farming means here at Balcaskie.

Farming organically is about working with nature, encouraging healthy soils and biodiversity as well as producing food in a way that considers the land.

From producing livestock to arable crops, organic principles are at the heart of how the Estate is managed.

Scanning season!

Last week all the cows & heifers on the Estate were scanned to make sure they’re in calf!

We’re thrilled that our heifers have scanned to an average of 87%, with other groups also scanning highly!

No doubt the farm staff will be extremely busy when calving time comes around…

Meet David from East Neuk Eggs 🐓🥚

David Moyes was one of our successful Pitch Up and Grow 2024 applicants, with his first flock of 200 laying hens arriving at Balcaskie in July 2025.

Interestingly, Dave’s original Pitch Up! application wasn’t for chickens at all…it was for a mushroom growing business. After exploring other opportunities, he took on the challenge of creating a mobile organic poultry enterprise from the ground up.

Today, every egg produced is sold, with demand consistently outstripping supply. Dave’s organic eggs can now be found supplying local restaurants and cafés, stocked in shops, and delivered directly to homes.

A brilliant example of how Pitch Up! Is helping turn great ideas into thriving rural businesses 🌱

Meet the Breed - Lincoln Red Cattle

To celebrate Rare Breeds Month, here’s an insight into the breed of cattle we keep here on the Estate…

Lincoln Red Cattle are one of the UK’s oldest native breeds, developed in Lincolnshire, and known for their deep cherry-red coat and hardiness. They were formally known as the “Lincolnshire Red Shorthorn”, a dual-purpose breed (milk and meat) until the 1960s, with a shift to purely beef focus later on.

Lincoln Red beef is highly regarded for its rich marbling, texture, and deep traditional flavour, largely due to the breed’s ability to thrive on slow-maturing forage-based diets. The slow maturing method allows them to develop a fuller, more complex taste profile. The meat is also dry aged at our on site butchery which enables the natural enzymes to break the muscles down over time. Moisture is pulled out of the meat using Himalayan Rock Salt, so the meat doesn’t shrink when cooked! 🥩
