'The pace, the people and the buzz'

We've had the delight of having Christy working alongside us for the past few months as part of her university placement bringing with her fresh perspectives, energy and a fantastic willingness to learn.

You can read Christys blog about her time with us here.

As part of my Business Management degree at Edinburgh Napier University, I’ve spent the last five months on placement here at Balcaskie, although in many ways, it didn’t feel like arriving somewhere completely new. Having worked at the Bowhouse Market Weekends for the past three and a half years...

East Neuk Eggs, started by David Moyes in 2025 is one of Balcaskie’s Pitch-Up! Businesses. Taking a slot in the rotation of the farm livestock, David moves his “Chicken Caravan” around following our cows. These happy hens spend their entire life in the mobile hen coup, foraging for herbs, grass and the occasional bug. Hens behaving as they should – lay eggs as they should taste! David has an honest box based at Balcormo KY10 2RE and we also stock the eggs in the butchery so don't miss out!

Back in 2016 we made a fantastic discovery while renovating the East Lodge!

It’s not all that often you find one of these in the kitchen. Not an ancient dishwasher, but a stone lined water well. Every house needed access to one of these before water was piped, and this one appeared during renovations. Since the workmanship and technical skill in order to build one of these is long lost (How did they build the walls as they dug the hole?.....upside down?) We thought it only fitting to preserve and display for future generations to admire.

Farming, forklift driving, workshops and boiled snails... Find out what our Events Co-ordinator and Admin Assistant, Emma, has been up to as she reflects back on her first year with us at Balcaskie.

This month marks a year since I joined the team at Balcaskie, taking on the role of Events Coordinator and Admin Assistant here on the Estate. Having grown up surrounded by food and farming by entire life, with both sides of my family being farming families, a career with fields at foot was always o...

As a working estate we have many outbuildings that serve many different purposes, one of which is to house this incredible historic lifeboat. The James & Mary Walker is the third lifeboat to have been stationed at Anstruther Life boat station on the edge of the Firth of Forth. It arrived in Anstruther on 30th July 1904 on a horse drawn carriage having travelled by rail from London. The vessel successfully completed many recorded rescues during her service and local family connections still exist in Anstruther. After many years of use, a change of name and neglect, she was abandoned in a boat yard on the Isle of Anglesey. In 2010 she was brought back home to Anstruther. Thanks to the conservation of the James and Mary Walker Community Restoration Project group, it's now undergoing conservation work in one of our barns on the estate. The barn itself is also under construction to help preserve the incredible history associated with the vessel.

Celebrating our Community: Julia Priestley

The next part of our community blog series comes from the amazing Julia, a Community Development Officer for the Anstruther Improvements Association a grassroots charity who works to improve Anstruther to the benefit of everyone!

If you had told me back in 2003, when I moved to the UK from Australia, that I’d eventually be spending my Friday mornings singing nursery rhymes in a restored historic Scottish church hall or chasing 1000 yellow plastic ducks down a burn, I might not have believed you. But ten years after moving ...
