Our spring barley early evaluation trials in Inverness have now been harvested marking the start of what should be an interesting period of assessing this years varieties.
These trials are an important part of our variety evaluation programme, giving us the opportunity to assess new and emerging spring barley genetics under local growing conditions.
With samples dried and in the lab, we’ll be looking closely at the data across agronomic yield, grain quality, maturity as well as micro-malt data to identify varieties with the potential to add value for growers and distillers in the future.

🌾Spring barley harvest 2026 is underway!

Here we have Sassy being combined in Moray, as the first spring barley is coming off the fields across Scotland.

The current spell of warm, dry weather is certainly helping, with some lovely low moisture samples.

Great to see the combines rolling and harvest getting underway. Here’s hoping the weather stays kind and we can keep things moving!

OILSEED R**E SEED – AVAILABLE NOW

Planning your OSR for this season? We have a strong range of varieties available, with options to suit different farms, fields and growing situations.

Our current range includes:

LG Adapt – The UK’s No.1 hybrid variety, offering strong all-round performance.

Aurelia – A farmer favourite, with consistent performance across different regions and seasons.

Crown – A newer hybrid clubroot variety with high yield and oil content, good stiffness and resistance to lodging. Also carrying TuYV and RLM7/RLM3 resistance.

Scorpion – A high-yielding clubroot variety with POSH, TuYV and RLM7 resistance, along with good autumn and spring growth.

Crome – A well-established favourite, known for reliable seed yield, good oil content, strong vigour and resistance to lodging.

With variety choice, seedbed conditions and drilling date all playing an important part in successful OSR establishment, now is a good time to get your seed requirements sorted.

As the combines roll across England and Scotland, it’s not just farmers who are busy.

Bees, butterflies and countless other pollinators are making the most of the barley fields, wildflower margins and hedgerows. These habitats play a vital role in supporting biodiversity across our farmland.

Last week we welcomed growers to the first of our two annual crop trial days, which was held at Myreside Farm, Inverkeilor.

The day provided an excellent opportunity to walk through our spring barley trials, showcasing a range of varieties. Alongside well-established commercial favourites such as Sassy and Laureate, we looked at promising newer varieties including Arrow and Aquarius, as well as several advanced breeding lines that are currently undergoing rigorous assessment before they can potentially be introduced to the market.

Our crop trials are held each year at a minimum of two locations across Scotland, allowing us to assess key characteristics including yield potential, straw strength, maturity and disease resistance across different growing conditions.

Ultimately, we’re looking for varieties that not only perform consistently in the field, but also meet the exacting malting specifications and deliver the quality our distilling customers expect.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us at Myreside Farm—we look forward to seeing many of you at our second trial day in Inverness next week.

Our Lead Agronomist, Alistair Eccles, has been busy crop walking across Scotland and today was in Easter Ross checking on of our growers’ crops of Sassy Spring Barley. Alistair was pleased to report that the crop is clean, healthy and progressing well, with awns expected to emerge within the next week. This marks the ideal timing for T2 applications to protect the flag leaf and maintain yield potential.

Sassy continues to prove a popular choice with growers across the region, consistently delivering high-quality grain for our maltings in Inverness. Its reliable performance and excellent grain quality have made it a trusted variety in the North of Scotland for many years.

Kevin, our commercial manager, was up having a look at our crop trials site situated just outside Inverness last week. Every year we run trials for both winter wheat and spring barley across the main arable areas in Scotland, where in conjunction with breeders and growers we put the seed to the test.
This is a vital stage in the breeding process to help identify potential new varieties that are commercially scalable, working for the grower, maltster and end user.

The Leith Corn Trade Golf Competition - The Spring Outing trophy is the oldest trophy within the LCTGC with the first competition being held back in 1901. It is a bushel sized wooden bowl lined with silver and sits on 3 intricate silver legs onto a triangular base, so it’s quite a substantial cup to have on the trophy cabinet!
The competition has been held at the very fine Kilspindie Golf Course at Aberlady in East Lothian since the 1940s and this is a course which can provide plenty of challenges, with much depending on which way the wind blows off the Firth of Forth. Gavin Walker rose to the challenge and managed a stableford of 44 points playing off his handicap of 15 which is a remarkable achievement, winning by 1 point.
