𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲: 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿!

It might seem like a good idea to give the previous cut an extra roll before adding fresh grass, but in reality it has the opposite effect. ⚠️
⠀
After silage is sealed, bacteria and moulds use up the last remaining oxygen. By compacting the old layer again, you are not removing extra oxygen from the pit.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴:
❌ Loosening the top layer again
❌ Introducing fresh oxygen
❌ Increasing the risk of heating and feed value losses

This is important with layered silage pits. The pit is opened several times and therefore comes into contact with oxygen more often. Any mistake in the process can quickly add up to losses. 💡

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵?
✔ Leave the existing pit as undisturbed as possible
✔ Only start rolling once the new layer is being added
✔ Keep the pit open for the shortest time possible
✔ Always cover it airtight and watertight between fillings

At the end of the day, the rule is simple: less oxygen means less heating and more milk from your own forage. 🐄
