I am still deeply uncomfortable using the C word as we are only poking a toe into November but one of our forward planning customers has ordered a box full of festive themed candles and melts. If you are planning your gifts already, do get in touch.

Making up a few bits for recent order and using the left over wax for some candles for the house. It’s that time of year when beeswax candles come into their own, they are great for removing cooking smells and leave a lovely scent. We are also about to make up some pure beeswax wraps as the reusable, environmentally friendly alternative to clingfilm, this pure cotton fabric is going to look amazing.

Follow up bottling session after the apple, cinnamon and vanilla mead from the other day. We now have few bottles of traditional mead and some of Blackberry, apple and vanilla which I am particularly pleased with. Was worried about the clarity but the addition of pectolytic enzyme seems to have fixed that.

Had some issues at bottling with bottle and cork sizes which will need to be remedied but this Apple, Cinnamon and Vanilla Mead tastes great and will surely improve with aging. Bees and honey are amazing.

We were joined by the Arnold Family today to meet the bees. Introduced them to the workings of the hives and the jobs we do to look after our bees. Surprising how fast the brood is reducing at the moment time for varroa treatment and winter feeding before we put the girls to bed for the winter.

I was undecided whether to store my supers (yes I use brood boxes not supers) wet after extraction or dry. Due to there still being minimal nectar coming in I have given them back to the bees over the crown boards for them to scavenge some back and clean them up. In a few days they will be removed and as I have seen a lot of wax moth around, I will be freezing them before storage this year. Then varroa and feeding to complete and we will be done for the year. All over too soon.

This is the beginning of the next step on our beekeeping journey. We had a fair amount of honey supers uncapped at extraction so as we have lost some honey to fermentation before when it wasn’t quite mature we are going to preempt the process and try to get it under control. Mead Making here we go. First step clean everything.

Making a start on mixing up sugar syrup for winter feed for the bees. Strange as it sounds granulated sugar has some benefits for the bees over fructose and glucose found in honey. It has a higher energy density and is less likely to trigger dysentery in the winter colony than honey. Bees store honey made up of fructose and glucose because they can’t generate the heat required to supersaturate sucrose. They add enzymes to break sucrose down into the smaller sugars. I am cheating and using a stove. It serves us well and does the bees well too.
