From Leeds to Boston… via Bournemouth. 🇬🇧➡️🇺🇸

After Monday’s visit to The Magpie Cafe in Whitby, there was one more place Alex particularly wanted to visit before heading back across the Atlantic.

Chez Fred in Westbourne.

Fred Capel has been a Ceres customer for many years, but more importantly, he’s become a good friend too — so it was great to spend some proper time together, talk fish & chips and enjoy a fantastic lunch.

And what a lunch.

Fresh Cornish hake and chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce and a bespoke Ceres curry sauce made especially for Chez Fred.

Then, because apparently we hadn’t eaten enough, Fred finished us off with homemade ice cream made using Jersey milk. 😂

Two iconic fish & chip businesses.
Two very different parts of the country.

A proper boil-out does the hard work. 🫧🔥

Here we’ve got a Florigo frying range with the fish pans boiling out using our Deep Fryer Cleaner.

From Leeds to Boston… via Whitby. 🇬🇧➡️🇺🇸

Some journeys in fish & chips are bigger than others.

We’ve known Alex Papaioannou for years, going right back to his days at The Bearded Sailor in Pudsey, Leeds. Alex built a fantastic business there, with a real emphasis on quality, consistency and doing things properly.

But after selling The Bearded Sailor, he isn’t leaving fish & chips behind.

Quite the opposite.

Alex is now preparing for his next chapter — taking everything he has learned in the British fish & chip industry and setting up a new fish & chip business in Boston, Massachusetts.

While he’s back in the UK, there were a couple of places he particularly wanted to visit before heading across the Atlantic.

So on Monday we headed to Whitby and one of the most famous names in British fish & chips: The Magpie Cafe

Great fish, great hospitality and plenty of conversation about the industry — past, present and what Alex is planning for America.

There’s something rather fitting about visiting businesses that have become part of British fish & chip history while Alex prepares to start his own next chapter thousands of miles away.

And The Magpie Cafe was only the first stop…
