Did you know Lord Nelson once attended a dance in Aylsham? 👀

It's one of those unexpected stories that makes exploring a historic Norfolk town so interesting.

The Black Boys Inn Black Boys Hotel once had its own ballroom, known as the Assembly Rooms, complete with chandeliers, fireplaces and a minstrels' gallery.

And among those who attended a dance there? None other than Nelson himself!

It's a fascinating glimpse into Aylsham's past — and a reminder that behind the town's historic buildings are stories you might never guess.

🏛️ If you love uncovering the stories behind the places you visit, Aylsham Heritage Centre is well worth discovering too. It's a wonderful place to delve deeper into the town's past and the people who shaped it.

🐌 You can also explore more of Aylsham's history through the Heritage Snail Trail (see details on the Visit Aylsham site), with 22 stops around the town combining art, heritage and fascinating local stories. There's plenty to discover for all ages.

Next time you're exploring Norfolk, why not come and uncover a few of Aylsham's stories for yourself?

Four ways to discover autumn around Aylsham 🍂🥾

Fancy getting outdoors for some Autumn fresh air? Aylsham is surrounded by some wonderful walking country — from peaceful former railway lines to historic parkland and countryside paths.

🚶 Marriott's Way – follow the route of an old railway line, now a peaceful trail through the countryside.

🌳 Blickling Estate NT – discover woodland walks, lakeside scenery and some rather unexpected historic landmarks.

🚂 Bure Valley Railway – enjoy a countryside walk alongside the heritage railway, with the chance of spotting a steam train.

🍁 Weavers' Way – follow the trail from Aylsham towards Blickling, where town streets give way to open countryside.

Whether you fancy a gentle stroll or a longer adventure, there's plenty to explore. And Aylsham makes a lovely place to return to afterwards.

We've just published a new blog, Autumn Walks in and Around Aylsham, with route ideas, starting points and useful planning information.

A cocktail bar, tapas kitchen and fish deli, all under one roof?

It may sound like an unlikely combination, but at M's of Aylsham it feels completely at home.

When Emma Payne created M’s, she wanted somewhere intimate and welcoming: a place where you could arrive with friends, sit comfortably at the bar by yourself or settle in for an evening without watching the clock.

Today, M’s brings together properly made cocktails, tapas, fresh fish and some wonderful Norfolk produce. But it has also become part of its customers’ lives – somewhere chosen for first legal drinks, anniversaries, family celebrations and news that simply has to be shared.

As Emma says: “Of all the places in the world they could do it – that’s what keeps me going.”

Our second Meet the Business feature tells the story of how M’s began, why cocktails really are an art, and how one small bar on Red Lion Street became a place where conversations and friendships happen.

There are Cromer crabs, Piña Colada-drinking rugby players and some rather fabulous mermaid wallpaper too…

What if exploring a town felt a little more like a treasure hunt? 🐌

On your next visit to Aylsham, look out for the snails.

There are 22 stops on Aylsham’s Heritage Snail Trail, leading you around the town and uncovering stories you could easily walk straight past.

And although younger visitors will enjoy spotting the snails, this definitely isn’t a trail just for children.

If you’re interested in art, local history, heritage or simply discovering the stories behind the places you visit, there’s plenty here for all ages.

Along the way you’ll encounter tales of medieval buildings, an old coaching inn, Roman discoveries, a former cinema, wartime Aylsham and even a pioneering anaesthetist.

There’s art to discover too. Each stop features work created by a local artist, with QR codes revealing more about the history of the location and the inspiration behind the artwork.

You can pick up a free guide and map from Aylsham Heritage Centre or follow the trail online.

So whether you come for the art, the history, the stories — or simply the pleasure of discovering something you weren’t expecting — the Heritage Snail Trail is a great way to explore Aylsham. 🐌
