“Photos from a hidden Ulster”

Go west

Today we took off across the Foyle to explore the wee backwaters, lanes and old graveyards in and around Lough Swilly ,well we were always going to gravitate towards Ramelton ( love this place so much , this is where we’ll retire to when we’re too old to drive there ) but along the way there’s so many ancient places to find like “ Killydonnell Friary “ so quiet and peaceful those old monks new where to build ,spent ages reading the stones and just taking in the serenity,on down past the salmon leap at Ramelton ,had we bit to eat sitting along the walkway that runs past the water and the wee woman spent some time in her favourite wee real authentic vintage shop ,brilliant sunshine all the way now that was a nice day out

Due to essential farm maintenance we will have to close off our carpark tomorrow all day ,now if you are coming to see us cones will be placed across the gate ,the shop will be open as usual just park on the road and walk in ,it’s no distance ,we’ll be on hand to carry anything out to your car if needed , it’s likely to be a bit hectic first thing but by lunch time the bulk of the work will be done ,sorry for the inconvenience but it’s only one day 🚜

As we approach this weekend the weather once again has really taken its toll on our wee world here “ far from the madding crowd” but we do try , growing and getting time with our seeds, our future crops and ourselves in the hot houses in the cool, calm quiet evenings is what is keeping what’s left of our sanity in tact in this mad, mad world .

Last weekend was beyond busy in the shop,we’re only in through the door tonight and well we have done real well to pull together what produce we can for this Friday/Saturday, now we cannot seem to get on top of the stock management ,the replenishing , the shop is now working at capacity , not just everything is available, not everything is ready but if you make it to us be patient we always do get everyone served and hopefully out with a smile

Following in the footsteps of St Patrick from Slemish mountain to Lough Derg

Just went out a wee drive this afternoon to just get away and clear the head ,we ended up as if by divine intervention at “Lough Derg “ in Donegal although this lake would pass for a lake anywhere in Italy it is a traditional site of pilgrimage ,retreat and worship and truly a very calming and peaceful place to be, we walked along the shoreline paths and really enjoyed an afternoon to ourselves although in the end the midges just got a better of us and we had to bolt back to the car we would however recommend this lakeside walk to anyone

We started out this morning with a full shop, full stores etc. ,this has been easily the biggest days sales this year so far and now we have so little left on the shelves , that was a hard one alright ,we’re out on our feet ,completely shattered, THANKYOU all so much for your never ending support it’s never, ever taken for granted so I think
we’ll just close the gates up and lay down beside the dogs for an hour ❤️

A lifetime ago when we started out on our growing journey we have
made great friendships over the decades, the late Robin Cherry was a man we looked up to, we sold his “Sunbeam “ potatoes and he became a great friend to us and we miss him terribly but there is always a natural progression,so now we trade with his son Adrian (a real chip of the old block)and as such we are now selling his beautiful fresh Pak Choi ,grown just up the road from us here in Ballymena,it’s just simply perfection….

Now a wee word or two about this unseasonal weather ,last week we were in big trouble with the extreme heat now its torrential rain and flooding that’s the threat for us ,we’re not easily beat and we will do our level best to have as much in the shop as is possible, we are working on very late this evening so stick with us ,it may not be too tidy,it may not be that pretty but the shop will be fully stocked ( just watch this space) 🚜

“Bird on a wire”

We have so many little wild birds around the Market Garden but this wee ROBIN REDBREAST knows which side of the bread the butters on, where ever we’re turning soil it’s there picking off whatever little squirmy edibles we dig up “ our constant companion”

Now this has been a hard week all round for us , for growers more used to dealing with inclement conditions when we get warm weather we just can’t cope and this week has been a warm one alright ! We’re getting very little sleep, irrigation is going on right around the clock .and all the produce is suffering badly from heat stress, we are doing our best to keep the shop stocked but sadly we cannot make any promises as to what will be ready, sellable and looking good ,as each week passes we get busier and busier ,this weekend will be a battle ,it’ll be bad if it beats us and somehow we feel the weather is about to break, so let’s just see what the next 48 hours bring

We hope to be open in the morning as usual , we’ve worked very late this evening to get everything ready ,the extreme heat brings a whole new set of problems with it but this sort of weather is a rare occurrence in this part of the world so we’ll not complain ,here is a photo of “the Reverend “ our resident ,friendly pheasant who comes up to us in the field to get fed each evening ,he’s a handsome guy !
