Just back from a couple of days in Donegal, managed to get down to to grab another bottle of the recently released PX, this time to get one opened.
This is their Batch 1 direct fired Single Malt, fully matured in a 500L Spanish Oak Butt from Juan Pino in Spain, with the Cask being seasoned for 24 months with PX, its bottled at 58.77% and a bottle of this limited release is around the ยฃ125 mark, NAS, with only 698 bottles available.
I have tried this twice now, so it sealed the deal on getting this one opened as soon as we got home to get into it properly.
Poured and to the nose, sweet ripe dark plum is the first thing to jump out, a little new make and bite from that 58%, the dark fruit note on this just builds and builds in the glass, custard powder dust, then a real dirty gritty earthy note, burnt demerara sugar and a sharp wood tanins. The nose on this is so thick you can almost taste it.
On the lips, a dry sweet spice washes over your tongue, boiled brandy balls sweets, chilli jam, theres a balsamic note there as well, as the spice eases and takes you to a long juicey dark jammy finish, you are left with a salty, briney almost light bbq sauce taste, this is such a chewy Whiskey I love the depth in it and that colour is amazing.
Adding a tiny touch of water in this smooths out that spicey grip it has on your tongue, promoting more raisin like sweet fruit notes, with parma violets on the nose, but still holds its rawness, but I prefer the kick and flavours of the unaltered full cask strength in the glass.
This is a big yes for me, scoring this and taking in the cost bracket of the plus ยฃ120 bottles around the same, im giving this an 8/๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ thats a really treat of a pour, stands out with its flavour against two of my favourite bottles at the moment which have the same vibe, it is pricey, but its a small Distillery and release, the bottle is stunning and comes in a beautiful display box, so it feels like you got your moneys worth.
Im going to enjoy this one on the "special" occasions and excuses I can make up to lift this out, cant wait to get a cigar lit with a pour of this, definitely going on the favourite shelf.
