Potato harvest is almost here at The Spud Barn 🥔🚜

We’re a multi-generational family farm here in Lincolnshire, growing potatoes that make their way directly from our fields to your fork.

From planting and caring for the crop to harvesting, storing and packing, every stage happens right here on our family farm in Bardney, Lincolnshire.

And when they’re ready, we deliver them locally too..

The wait is almost over - our first Melody potatoes of the new season are nearly ready, which means The Spud Barn deliveries are returning too.

What can a yield dig tell us? 🥔

As we get closer to potato harvest, yield digs become an important part of understanding how the crop is progressing beneath the soil.

We dig up a measured section of the row, collect the potatoes and look at things like tuber numbers, size distribution and overall weight. From this, we can build a picture of the potential yield across the field.

But it’s not just about how many tonnes might be coming out of the ground.

Yield digs help us see how the crop is developing and whether the potatoes are reaching the size we’re looking for. That information helps us make decisions around the final stages of the growing season, including when it might be time to desiccate the crop.

After a challenging season of heat and dry weather, these digs are also our first real indication of how the crop has performed.

As we look ahead to this year’s potato harvest, we’re keen to better understand what local catering establishments are looking for when sourcing their potatoes - from varieties and quantities to what matters most when choosing a supplier.

If you buy potatoes for your business, we’d really appreciate a couple of minutes of your time to complete our short survey.

Irrigated vs non-irrigated 🥔💧

This season has really shown the difference access to water can make.

With prolonged dry spells, high temperatures and very little rainfall, keeping enough moisture around the developing potato crop has been a real challenge.

This reel show the difference between potatoes that have had consistent irrigation and those that haven’t - and it’s a pretty striking comparison.

For us, drip irrigation has played a huge part this season. Unlike overhead irrigation, which applies water across the whole surface of the crop, drip delivers it directly into the root zone, helping us use water more efficiently and consistently, with less lost to evaporation - particularly important during hot, dry conditions.

With the current heat and continued lack of rainfall, having greater control over when and where that water is applied is helping us support the crop through an incredibly demanding growing season.

There’s only so much we can control when it comes to the weather, but how efficiently we use the water available to us can make a real difference.

A lot can change beneath the surface 🌱🥔

While the fields are still looking green above ground, underneath the crop is continuing to develop as we edge closer to one of the biggest points in our farming calendar.

For now, it’s plenty of checking, irrigating and watching the weather as we let the potatoes do their thing.

August in the potato fields means one thing… all eyes are on the crop 🥔🌱

We’re keeping a close eye on tuber size, irrigation, weather conditions and overall crop health, alongside regular yield digs to give us a better idea of what’s happening beneath the surface.

As we get closer to lifting, every check helps us make the right decisions on timing and gives the crop the best chance of reaching its full potential.

The countdown to potato harvest is well and truly on 🚜🥔
