Farms for City Children have shared an impressive report covering the impact of the £20,000 grant we donated last year. The funding, thanks to players of The Health Lottery contributed to 3396 children from schools and 157 CYP from youth and community groups, taking part in a farm residential in 2025.

A young person who visited a farm said, “I feel like the wind is saying hello and my eyes feel fresh and as if they’re seeing stuff for the first time.”

All evidence suggests that children in primary schools are now starting their school years with delayed development, poor language skills, reduced attention, lower self-regulation and limited experience of sustained play. The impact of the farm residential experience on individual children who lack confidence and communication skills can be life changing.

We’re thrilled to have been able to support and visit Farms for City Children in 2025. We look forward to hearing more from the charity in 2026, their 50th anniversary year.

One very simple change people can make right now is to start composting food waste.

The implications of this simple action are far more far reaching and impactful than just diverting food waste:

⚡️Less curbside collections so a reduction in vehicles on the road AND less energy expended in the process of collecting food waste.

🙊Food waste would sit for less time and therefore less likely to be anaerobic, thus releasing methane.

♻️Interaction with food waste through composting highlights how much food is wasted and therefore helps reduce food waste.

🌱Composting food waste builds a soil nourishing medium. A Compost that is alive with microorganisms, fungal networks, worms and insects. Everything needed to build more resilient soil and grow biodiversity.

🪏 Getting stuck in and getting your hands dirty has known links to positive mental health. That daily journey to the composter with your food waste can be a little reset.

As you can see, there are many many many positives to composting your food waste. Get stuck in and give it a go!

The Dan in Ridan is keeping the world turning in a different way! Driven by the need for personal challenge and desire to raise money for an incredible charity Médecins Sans Frontières / MSF he has taken on the Lands End to John O’Groats cycle challenge.

As ever he has not chosen the easy route. Mainly off-road, 1250miles and over 34,000m of ascent it is going to be a challenge! Best of luck Dan!!

If this doesn’t warm the cockles of your 💚. Then frankly, nothing will.

On a recent trip to Manchester, we were treated to the Compost song.

🎤 Performed by the students of St Malachy’s Primary School and read on himself on his accordion!🪗

💚 The visit was already something very special. Watching the kids flooding with their food waste and swarm like busy bees around the Ridan. Each child knew what they needed to do. Within 10 minutes, the food waste had been loaded into the steaming Ridan and they all lined up to sing.

They sing this song every day!!

Just one example of how important education is.

Earlier on this day, we had delivered to a secondary school we’re one of the year seven students whooped when we rolled the Ridan into position. They’ve been used to using one at his primary setting with Raddon.

We visited an amazing human today. Raddon of who manages the green space in Manchester. The work he is doing is incredible. We witnessed the most fantastic moment where about 10 kids flooded onto the allotment site and got stuck in chopping up food, scraps loading up the Ridan and collecting effluent from the other end to load it into a maturation box. It was beautiful organised chaos.

In addition to the growing space Raddon heads up the food bank; which is where the food from the garden ends up. Some is used in the community kitchen, any scraps of food unfit for consumption is fed back into the RIDAN. He couldn’t get more circular than that.
