Tonight’s team Leanne Gemma Suzy Elena and Rachel on probably one of the wettest runs ever - so loving our new branded coats! The outreach team saw in excess of 50 street friends most men and only 5 women.
Tonight, we met a woman in her 30s who had recently been discharged from hospital following a drug overdose. She was cold, wet, vulnerable, and at risk of experiencing another overdose. We were able to provide her with warm clothing, hot drinks, and food, but we also gave her Naloxone, a life-saving emergency medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
Our team carries Naloxone at all times, alongside the emergency services. By leaving her with this medication, there is a chance that, should she overdose again, a fellow rough sleeper, friend, or member of the public could administer it and potentially save her life.
Sometimes, a small intervention can make the difference between life and death. It's important to remember that drug addiction is often linked to deeper issues. Many women who struggle with substance misuse have experienced trauma, including domestic abuse, sexual violence, childhood neglect, poor mental health, homelessness, or the loss of family relationships.
