The Bull & Gate has stood on Kentish Town Road since 1871, although there's been an inn on this site for much longer. It's Grade II listed and still full of Victorian detail, with carved woodwork, ornate mirrors and decorative plasterwork that survived while so much of London's pub heritage disappeared. It also became one of the capital's great grassroots music venues, hosting early gigs by Oasis, Blur, Coldplay and The Libertines before they filled arenas.

We went for a pint of Young's London Original, and in a pub like this it just makes sense. First brewed in Wandsworth in 1864, it's regarded as London's original pale ale, with a fruity aroma and satisfyingly bitter finish. Young's itself dates back to 1831 and has been serving London pubs for nearly 200 years, surviving seven monarchs, 48 Prime Ministers and two world wars.

There’s something fitting about drinking a b**r with that much history in a pub that has been part of London's story for more than 150 years.
