Oh my, this is scary. I've never spent time away from the farm in summer. I will still be here until next Tuesday morning. We are only away one week. But I won't have time to do much between now and when we leave other than get florists orders cut, sort the flowers for Saturdays wedding and then I'll spend Sunday and Monday clearing up.
We will shut the shed from tomorrow after all orders have been collected.

The pale lemon Marguerite 'Sauce Hollandaise' hedge is spectacular right now. I'm thinking of cutting most of it for the wedding for a meadow arrangement. And we've three beds of larkspur just started. Luckily all those stems are sold - three florists want them, otherwise I'd be having a panic about getting it dried.

But I've not managed to get all the weeding done that I wanted too, so I'm worried I'll come back in two weeks to a huge mess. The statice, feverfew and antirrhinum in the mid summer beds (mostly weeded) is just about to burst into bloom. How will this look in two weeks? I'm popping a photo on here of how it looks now so I can compare when we get back.

Our housesitter is brilliant with the animals. But asking him to look after any plants or cut flowers is probably a step too far! And me. I'm going to have to learn to let go, not worry about things and know that whatever happens while I'm gone won't have to matter.

My favourite blush and peachy roses

In the garden -
Desdemona (Austin) - vigorous healthy bushes. Prolific bloomer which repeats well. Fragrant. Blooms are a classic English rose shape borne in upright clusters. A real showstopper in the garden where it is glorious. But it's not good for cutting. A poor vase life makes it only good for event work, and even then I wouldn't trust full out blooms not to shatter in the slightest breeze. Best enjoyed in the border. Pink buds open to peach and fade to white.

In the garden and cutting -
Frances Meilland also called Prince Jardinier (Meilland) - vigorous, healthy and fragrant. Bears huge flowers on long, strong and sturdy stems. The large petal count gives blooms a luxurious look. Very good vase life makes it a superb rose for cutting and blooms last well even when fully open. Beautiful pinky blush which fades as they age.

In the polytunnel and cutting -
Chandos Beauty (Harkness) - mid sized bushes, healthy. Bears beautiful peachy blooms on long stems. Classic traditional tea rose flowers with a fantastic fragrance. The buds are exquisitely shaped. Good vase life. We grow in the polytunnel to ensure the extra long stems needed for bouquet and wedding work. Would never be without her.

In the garden and cutting -
Courage (Kordes) - mid sized, healthy bushes. Flowers have the shape of Frances Meilland (although not as large) and the colour of Chandos Beauty. Unfortunately only lightly scented. Still a good one for cutting as throws out long stems and has a good vase life.

Its the 15th of June. Our actual 35th wedding anniversary. And just like 35 years ago we have a persistant rain this morning. To be fair the weather's not as bad today as it was then. Then it was torrential, we had to use brooms to push up the marquee roof as the water was pooling on it, threatening a collapse. We had to get heaters out for the bridesmaids in short sleeved dresses who were freezing.

This week is all about weddings. The 'Chandos Beauty' roses are looking great ready to go out to a florist for her wedding on Thursday. And I'm spending every moment spare this week working on prep for a wedding on Saturday for a couple who are as close to being family as it gets, without being actually related by blood. The weather for Saturday looks good. Fingers crossed!

We will be closed from Wednesday for two weeks - firstly to allow me to focus on wedding florals and then because we will be driving up to Skye for a little break to celebrate our anniversary. The shed will re-open on the Wednesday 1 st July at 9 am.

Thank-you once more Bedford. We had all but sold out by lunchtime. Just one large vase of sweet peas left.

I had the best lunch from Soul’s - Fusion Plant-Based Food, sent some beautiful cakes from Luke Stowe and bread from Andrei & Ana back for Jack who has been feeling under the weather and now I'm celebrating a great day with a delicious Dark Mule from - highly recommend!

Its a beautiful afternoon and the market is on until three. Still time to pop down!

Hopelessley romantic larger arrangements of roses and long stem sweet peas. Last things I will make today for tomorrow's market Flea - Art - Local Produce.

Of course I'll be up super early to make sure I've got enough extra buckets of flowers so I can make up bouquets and arrangements while I'm there.

Its going to be a fantastic day. Hope to see you there!

Market prep day. A stressy day today. It started OK but then phones ring, people need help and tasks mount up. I've too much on this week and I'm spiralling a bit. Trying to find calm in the repetitive task of stripping leaves and bunching. Focus on the moment, forget everything else. Breathe.

We will have some really beautiful mixed bunches and sweet pea jars available Flea - Art - Local Produce tomorrow. The flower stall will be a little oasis with buckets full of colour and fragrance. Nature's therapy, if you have had a stressy week take some time out tomorrow and come see us on the Harpur Square. Great music, good food, and the flea family of traders ready to sell you lovely things and put the world to rights.

I'm just sorting out the second order of cake flowers this week. No I don't have dahlias yet - this is an image of some edible flowers that went out to a film set last year. The stylist had asked for cosmos to be included in the mix, a quick google search will tell you that cosmos is edible, but a more detailed search will tell you some cosmos species are not. Guidelines are hazy. The yellow Cosmos sulphureus is the only one that is classified as edible.
Prepping flowers for use on cakes or food platters is a faff. You have to know your stuff, a quick google search won't cut it, and google says some dumb stuff. You could make someone quite ill, or worse if you trust google. You have to keep detailed records of batch numbers, dates and contents. I also take a photo of each batch. We are edging away from the realms of flowers into food prep here.

I never really sell flowers for people to eat, only as decor. I label them as 'food safe' instead of 'edible' - they won't make food they are with inedible or toxic. However they are not intended to be eaten and some may taste a little bitter, have an unpleasant texture or mostly just be quite bland.

I stick to species I know to be bombproof edible. I've eaten all of them myself - dahlias, roses, antirrhinum, cornflower, viola.
Even so I still worry a bit and prefer my customers don't eat the flowers. After all peanuts are most definately edible. But they will still kill some people. I don't know of anyone thats allergic to dahlias. But I bet someone is somewhere!

Some people truly are masters of producing and using edible flowers Kathy Brown Kathy Brown makes the best cakes going with home grown edibles, Sinéad Sinéad, Aweside Farm supplies the most wonderful edible flowers to chefs and bakers.

Mostly I think I'll just stick to growing for the vase.

Some of today's buckets all going out to florists. Tomorrow all orders, except one, are arrange it yourself retail buckets.

Thursdays are always busy days for wholesale and wedding orders as florists run around getting everything in place for a busy weekend of sales or events.

Friday lunchtimes or after work are when my retail customers come to get flower buckets for their weekends - for birthdays, anniversaries, dinner parties or just because.

Up early today to cut before the worst of the rain, which will be pretty persistant today. But it looks like we will have good weather for the weekend. And it's a market weekend Flea - Art - Local Produce so I'm very happy about that!
