Today I managed to get my phone out of my pocket in time to capture the pure bravado of grey partridges who have chicks. When I went into their pen they appeared out of the grass in full defensive mode, hitting my boots and fluttering all around me. By the time I got my phone out and hit record they'd calmed down a bit but were still giving me clear indications that I should bu**er off quick. I haven't seen their chicks yet but I'll put some chick crumb and mealworms in the pen and I'm sure I'll see them sooner rather than later.

He really is becoming a bit of a nob.

My poor little lawn mower has finally given up and I had to nip up to Argos to get a vaguely affordable replacement. I'm cutting rides in the grass in the parent reared covey breeding pens. This is to give yound chicks areas where they can get away from from long damp grass and places where they can dry off in he sun.

Some of my Reeves pheasants have been a real pain in the arse when it comes to eating their own eggs. So when I saw a pile of old lick tubs at farm I was visiting I asked if I could have them to make weatherproof egg laying cover for my reeves pheasants. They were free, and an extra nest site, thats a bit darker might make a difference.

I have a partridge hen who's nested in the grass in the middle of her pen. She's perfectly safe in her pen so it doesn't really matter where she puts her nest, but if she was in the wild she'd be at the mercy of farm operations such as topping or silage making. Its a sad fact that we lose a significant number of ground nesting birds to farm machinery. This isn't about blaming farmers, they've got a job to do and a living to earn like everyone else but I just wish there was a simple, effective way for farmers to to reduce the impact on ground nesting birds and animals like hares and deer during the breeding season.

Trying to keep ontop of who has a nest, where it is and how many eggs is quite a bit of work but can be made easier with a simple red flag.

If it wasn't for the significant cost of DoC traps I would have alot more of them. Don't get me wrong, I think a Fenn mk4 is a cracking trap but when it comes to consistently killing cleanly I think Docs are a big step up.

I love the noise they make!

If you have wild greys on your ground then I strongly urge you to concentrate on habitat improvement, properly targeted predator control and adopting sympathetic farming practices to help your native population of grey partridges to increase naturally.
But if you want to start a grey partridge project but haven't got any foundation stock to work with we can help because our parent reared grey partridge coveys are the next best thing to wild birds. Get in touch and we can make a plan to get your project up and running.
