This week, our Master of Wine, Jane Masters MW, recommends Catena Cabernet Sauvignon, a bold yet balanced red from the family recognised for their pioneering role in high-altitude viticulture in Argentina 🍷🇦🇷
“The Catena family are true pioneers of high-altitude winemaking in Argentina, and their expertise shines in this exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvested from their historic 950m high vineyards in the Agrelo sub-region of Mendoza, the intense sunshine and cool nights give this wine its remarkable concentration, balance, and distinctive character.
Aged in French oak barrels, it’s ruby in colour and opens with a restrained griotte cherry nose with a subtle touch of leather. The palate is smooth and supple, layering rich red and black fruits with fine-grained tannins, leading to a long finish with a satisfying grip. It pairs beautifully classic Argentine asado (a traditional barbecue of beef ribs, sausages, and steaks) and will be a treat shared with friends this Saturday afternoon in the garden.
Founded in 1902, Bodega Catena Zapata is widely credited with putting Argentine wine on the world map. For over 120 years, the Catena family, originally from Italy, has been making wines in Mendoza. Nicolas Catena was responsible for driving wine quality in the 1990s and the company now champions sustainable farming and biodiversity in the region. Today, his daughter, fourth-generation vintner Dr. Laura Catena, an author, biologist, and physician, leads the estate alongside chief winemaker Alejandro Vigil, carrying on their historic legacy through pioneering terroir research and old vine preservation.”
